OFFICIAL Chi Cubs Thread: Anyone can have a bad century/this is the year

not to poke too much fun, but I didn't realize me quoting VKB's Jesus hates the Cubs pic was the last message here from last year.

Pujols is healthy but the Cards still have glaring weaknesses, the Pirates are a joke, doubt the Brewers can sustain anything with their drop in pitching, the Astros will likely fall into one of their black holes for at least a month and the Reds have a million questions. Win the Central and anything can happen. Gotta believe the Dodgers will have Manny issues (once they finally get him signed) and I don't see anyone else out West contending. That leaves the Mets and Phils and dare I say the Marlins in the East for you to battle for NL rights. It could happen.
What are the Reds million questions?

What are the Reds million questions?

what happens when the Reds have to use anyone not named Cordero out of the bullpen?

Aaron Harang showed signs of aging last year. Can he rebound?

how many new ways can Dusty find to screw up his team?

how soon before Dusty ruins Volquez by overusing him?

Who will step up to be the team leader?

not a question, but Ramon Hernandez was a really good catcher. He's quickly falling apart.

Who is going to get on base for the Reds? Votto is the closest thing they have to a .300 hitter. He's also the only player they have remotely close.

The bullpen is actually in better shape than it has been in recent years. It's a group of no name guys but they are all pretty decent. Burton is on his way to becoming a stud.

Not worried about Harang at all. He has looked as good as ever in ST.

Yep, Dusty sucks.

Volquez will be fine. More worried about Cueto, but he won't pitch as many innings as Volquez so hopefully he will be fine.

Bruce and Phillips have taken the roles of clubhouse leaders.

Hernandez isn't what he once was, but he will be at least a league average catcher. GABP should help out his numbers quite a bit.

The team is OBP% challenged. Bruce should hit around .300 this year although he doesn't have the best OBP skills. Edwin at least has some decent OBP skills. Who knows, maybe this will finally be the year he breaks out.

The Reds have problems but not a "million" of them. The rotation should be one of the best in the NL. The Pen should be decent. They have some pop in the lineup. Should be pretty solid defensively.

So, they have some OBP problems and a terrible manager. They don't have any more ?'s than the Cardinals, Brewers or Astros do.

I can agree with the last statement, which is why I refrained from calling them a joke like I did the Pirates. I think the Reds finish ahead of the Brewers and it just depends on how long the inevitable slump lasts in Houston as to whether or not you finish behind them. The Cardinals have some issues too and that's why I don't see anyone giving the Cubs any serious contention for the Central pennant.

let's stay on topic here.

sorry, sir. I hope you notice I brought it all back in to the Cubs there at the end.

Yea, no one in the division really has the talent to catch the Cubs this year. I have a feeling that the Brewers are going to be awful this year. They have pop, but are relying on Yovani Gallardo to be their ace. That doesn't seem like it is going to end well.

Zambrano looked very impressive last night but i'm not concerned with anything he does early in the season. i want to see if he put in the work required to make it through the post season. until then, everything he does up until the playoffs means nothing. he's paid to do that.

the same holds true for Soriano.

i don't think Milton Bradley is going to make it through a whole season of playing everyday. they needed a left handed bat, but i think somebody with a little more durability could have been had.

Cub Fans, really? this is going to win you the World Series?

solid pickup.

Milton Bradley is a lazy POS. I have never seen someone trot down to first like that on a ball that should have been beaten out.

but then for a two week period he'll just do absolutely everything and totally make your head spin. Then he'll get an iffy called third strike and he's done for another month or two.

this is the kind of team that can go away in June and never be heard from again.

can we please have DeRosa back?

Bradley is a psycho...

thank you Dempster for finally giving my fantasy team a W..

sat in front of the most redneck Cubs fan at the Cards/Phillies game tonight that i've ever seen... being from TN, im usually considered a "redneck" in STL; i couldnt hold a candle to this guy... first he yelled "i told ya so" at least 50 times after Lohse gave up the grand slam against Ryan Howard; like La Russa would pull Lohse after 4 innings... then he continued to yell at the "ref" at first, even though we were by the foul pole.. "hit the ref in the throat" is what he yelled from the 8th-9th inning.. nothing against you Cubs fans (im friends with plenty of them), it was just funny to hear a redneck Cubs fan; thats a first for me
