Official Global Warming thread (merged)

Ok. You lost me. Im gonna go google now so i get on your level

Yes haha. That is correct. You're over thinking it.

Let's say I have 4ft rod. I cut the rod down to 1ft. The new length divided by the original length is 1ft/4ft. The units cancel and it exists as a unitless ratio of 1/4.

I thought he was privately funded?

Federal tax credits on EVs are what folks most ***** about. That and the huge tax incentives Nevada provided to get the gigafactory. Of course no other industries receive subsidies or tax breaks from states to open shop.

People like to single out and hate on Elon because he's in green industry.

Yeah...i am having difficulty with the concept. We both know its a quarter of the original four foot rod even though we wouldnt note it as "1/4 rod". The fraction is still describing something occupying space. It has dimension.

Stop making my brain hurt, SSP.

Can't i just hate on him for all the old fashion reasons (brilliant, rich, young, famous)?

5 billion in government support to his companies.

He is a fraud.

You really should have shut up while you were behind...

Energy subsidies are projected at US$5.3 trillion in 2015, or 6.5 percent of global GDP, according to a recent IMF study. Most of this arises from countries setting energy taxes below levels that fully reflect the environmental damage associated with energy consumption.

Provided that's global subsidies, but that's trillion. Big T on that dollar sign.

And if you really want to talk about subsidies, here's some other competing companies:

https://electrek.co/2016/11/25/tesla-subsidies-big-three-oil-industry/

Chrysler/Fiat: $17.5 billion in subsidies
General Motors: $50.3 billion in subsidies
Ford: $27.5 billion in subsidies

This is the part where you should STFU and move along.

Decent looking chap as well. GCB probably will agree for far different reasons than my "secure in my manhood enough to say such things."

That, but also because his companies basically aren't self-sufficient. As in, Tesla wouldn't exist without them, and there doesn't really seem to be a plan to get off of them. In fact, the plan is just to exploit them for as long as possible.

Tons of companies get incentives and tax breaks, but he's an easy target because of the extent to which he relies on them too. There aren't many companies of Tesla's size and visibility (maybe no other ones) that would fold overnight if the government cheese was cut off.

Math is hard, yo.

where'd all the greenies go? Just us ole bass turd skeptics in here now.

Just had to step away for awhile to check the heightened level of global embarrassment and ridicule Trump has wrought.

I think I'll just sit back and read and try to wrap my mind around the current reality.

Aren't these subsides tax credit for for costs a company incurred?

See my post above. GM probably wouldn't go very far if the government teet was cut off.

And SpaceX is far more self sufficient than anything else he has. As stated earlier today, they have 50 scheduled launches for different customers. Only about a third of those are government contracts.

Model 3 production begins next month along with a significant ramp up in production. This is what he's been working toward so we'll see if it shifts. I also think we'll see a lot of innovation from his companies in the fairly near term if they remain viable.

What a drama queen, so trump doesn't want America to be penalized for passing some treaty based on BS data from people who have a marxist agenda. Are you an American? Or world citizen?

Solid move by the president. The agreement is a joke and all about money for giant corporations.

No but he should have go go take a swig of raw sewage since he seems to be so fond of the stuff.

Yep! This treaty which hadn't even gone into effect yet will cause the lakes and rivers to run with the raw sewage of all those textile mills that have been stockpiling their waste just WAITING for the day to destroy the environment. Women and children will die from this. The brown white spotted mongrel grouse will go extinct now!

Next thing you'll be worried about is the Department of Education secretary killing kids.

Oh wait..

Solar City was/is the weakest of the companies but the new solar roof was apparently something no one in the industry saw coming and might be a game changer.

Then let the market decide. If the product is good, it will stand on its two feet

I don't disagree; GM itself was rescued by the federal government in 2009 and wouldn't even exist today in its current form without government intervention; just trying to explain why Musk and Tesla might be singled out.

Despite receiving a smaller nominal amount than traditional automakers, he's much more reliant on them and ultimately his company makes very expensive toys for rich people using public money. Easy target.

He is an easy target. However, if the Tesla line was cheaper and had a better infrastructure, he'd be making money hand over fist. But it's a win/lose situation for him. Accept subsidies to expand the line/infrastructure (possibly bring cost down in the long run) or don't accept subsidies charge full rate and slow expansion.
