Official Global Warming thread (merged)

You are only the 3rd person that I've seen that has mentioned the HUGE issue of disposal of these batteries. I have a tree-hugger friend that constantly harasses me about drinking bottled water. My response to her is that it was the liberals that pushed everybody to start using plastic bottles (and plastic everything else) 30-40 years ago because the plastic was easily recyclable. Don't blame me that the liberals lied and now you have plastic stacking up everywhere.

I blame the media and pols. NEVER question anything. Frankly, they think we are stupid.

High demand, heat in California threatens the power grid (msn.com)

So regulations of power grid and water utilities matter. Self perpetuating non sense. Kill your available supply then blame the lack of resourse for misery.

Energy crisis is a 'wake up call' for Europe to ditch fossil fuels - CNN

A different kind of CNN propaganda. Europe is having an energy crisis partly because of renewables. The only solution to the variable supply that renewables offer is gas. It is also cheap and cleaner than coal. The downside would always be supply and potential cost spikes. They were warned multiple times particularly by the orange man about Russia gaining leverage from their over reliance on Russia gas.

The answer is to find additional supply of natural gas or switch back to coal and nuclear as a base load source with reduced solar/wind. That's it. Those are your two options. Solar/wind will do nothing to fix this problem.

Greta Thunberg leads supporters in chorus of 'you can shove your climate crisis up your a***' at COP26 climate summit

  • Greta Thunberg gave a speech telling demonstrators: 'No more whatever the f*** they are doing inside there!'
Greta Thunberg was filmed leading protesters in a chant of 'you can shove your climate crisis up your a***' at COP26 in newly emerged video from her rally yesterday.

Outside in Festival Park yesterday, Miss Thunberg gave a passionate and foul-mouthed speech, telling demonstrators: 'Inside Cop, there are just politicians and people in power pretending to take our future seriously... No more blah blah blah, no more whatever the f*** they are doing inside there!'

A Scottish attendee had appeared to suggest singing 'you can shove your rules up your a***' before Miss Thunberg put her own spin on the popular melody of 'She'll Be Coming 'Round The Mountain When She Comes'.

Good for Greta. She now realizes that this (climate change meeting BS) is a "clown show" & only another money grabbing scam of fraud meant only for more money that the rich & powerful can put into their own bank accounts. There's not much one can do to keep the weather at 72 degrees & sunny all year round. There's always going to be the 4 Seasons that happens on earth which God created for it to happen. Man-made climate change is very minimum & it's not going to cause the world to end as we know it in another 8-10 years .... another 10 mile long wide meteor is on it's way to do that.

This sounds like an industry killer event. It signals that a political regulatory body can't be trusted to make decisions that stick. Nuclear requires major capital investments. Those are extremely risky if you have no guarantee of longevity.

Irony is that to address something as nebulous as climate change, it's likely you will shut down your most important tool against climate change.

Not sure how you’ve arrived at your opinion of this ruling as an “industry killing event”? The issue for this site in Miami which has been in operation since 1973 and is in no present danger of being shut down is that the most recent 30 year extension may not have considered possible rises in ocean levels. I support nuclear energy and have no problems with an license extension that can be voided early if local environmental conditions change that place the reactors in danger. Now if they were saying the license should be pulled because we know in X years the plant will be consumed by the ocean then we have a different story but that’s not what’s happening.

Also, every nuclear plant is not located close to sea level so again not an industry killer

The lifetime extension process is very challenging. Doing a full environmental impact review will add several years to the process. And what level of ocean rising will they have to consider?

But the reason it's an industry killer is that the maintenance needed to extend lifetime can be in the 100s of millions. Would you make that investment knowing that the next president can stack the NRC to reverse that decision? Turkey Point is licensed for another 10 years. That's not as long as it sounds. And nuclear plants aren't rolling in dough right now. It's bad enough to already be over-regulated, but then to not even be able to rely on the battles you thought were over not ever being over, that's too much.

The Swedish activist has a new message: Don’t just listen to the science, listen to the most vulnerable.

By Karl Mathiesen

Greta Thunberg’s childhood ended during the pandemic.

Just a few months before the arrival of the coronavirus, the Swedish teenager and her fellow activists had organized a march of millions — possibly the largest climate protest in history. But lockdowns put an end to the boisterous Fridays For Future school strikes, which Thunberg had pioneered and spread around the world. With entire countries in isolation, Thunberg’s movement was “paralyzed,” recalled Dominika Lasota, one of the group’s most prominent figures in Poland.

The pandemic wasn’t just a body blow for an organization completely reliant on momentum from the streets. For many of the activists involved, it also deprived them of a place to give voice to a shared dread: what kids in these times call “climate anxiety.”

Greta Thunberg doesn’t want you to talk about her anymore
