It's just a pot with a filter that can be pushed down. You put hot water and coffee grounds in the pot and stir, and then after 4-5 minutes push the filter down. That presses the grounds to the bottom (below the mesh screen) and you pour off the coffee above the screen. Many articles claim the French press was actually invented in Italy BTW. The inexpensive ones work just fine - I've got a cheap glass one like this and a stainless steel double walled type - no difference in the coffee.

I've got a plastic one for camping. To me, it's easier than a percolator.
 
And that is a matter of opinion. Any and all coffee beans I have seen used for coffee, except some of the real fru fru stuff, I would describe as burnt, dried out, husks of what they were.

Your opinion is as wrong as two boys kissing on a Sunday in Church.
