The running game looks weak, and that’s being charitable. There are no Ball State front 7’s in the SEC. As usual, our offensive line has no consistency in getting a strong push, even against poor competition.
Pitt has 2 NFL caliber guys on the Defensive line...they gave WV's offensive line fits, and theirs is likely better than ours. Hooker had all day to stare down WR and make 3rd and 4th reads today. Will have to be on his toes next week. He handled SEC pass rushes well last year though. Remember, we averaged 40 points per game. Coach is great at calling quick reads, RPOs, etc against good pass rushing teams like UGA and Gumps. Not gonna lose sleep over an (arm)Pit defense.
We tackled much better in space last night than we did last season. Corners and safeties alike. We still gave up too many conversions on 3rd/4th downs ( 5 for 16) against a much lesser opponent...but once a guy caught the ball or especially on screen plays, the 1st man there made the tackle or at the least wrapped him up til " a host of Volunteers" could show up. Our secondary looked MUCH improved on fundamentals like wrapping up, hip turn discipline, knowing scheme, and good ball awareness gave us 2 picks.
We hit the QB 7 or 8 times but had zero sacks. That scares the crap out of me. If we have to bring blitzers to get any pressure on opposing QBs the tossup games like Pitt, FU, LSU, USCjr will be much harder to win and UGA and Bama will pick our secondary apart because that extra Blitzer will not get to their QB any more than the front 4 will...no chance of beating them without a pass rush IMO.
I have been pulling hard for Hyatt since he committed. He runs a laser timed 4.31, after 2 years of playing sparingly this is supposed to be his year. Starts in the slot now....he dropped a 45 yard bomb on a post when Hooker hit him in both hands back shoulder style. Brought the ball into his body with both hands, then fumbled it away between his legs without the DB even putting a hand on the ball or pulling on Jalins arms etc. He just flat dropped it. He is a junior FFS...if he drops more like that, i hope they sit his ass down and Squirrel or Holliday will be happy to start in the slot over him. I was really disappointed to see that BS...granted, Hyatt caught the TD on our 1st offensive play....but flat out dropping 45yd post catches will cost us ballgames in conference play. Getting open is hard. Catching a football is not. No excuse for that BS from a junior starter.
I thought Small, Wright, etc looked good at RB especially after contact. Freshman Sampson was the lower rated of the 2 new RBs by a good margin....he is shifty and very fast though and could be a star before he leaves the Hill.
Thats all I've got. Still think we go 8-4. Appreciate the responses to my last post. Think they're gonna turn off the machines on my BIL today. I held my Dads hand and prayed over him while they did the same. Life will go on for the rest of us. So glad ball season is finally here folks. Go VOLS
