Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

The running game looks weak, and that’s being charitable. There are no Ball State front 7’s in the SEC. As usual, our offensive line has no consistency in getting a strong push, even against poor competition.

Pitt has 2 NFL caliber guys on the Defensive line...they gave WV's offensive line fits, and theirs is likely better than ours. Hooker had all day to stare down WR and make 3rd and 4th reads today. Will have to be on his toes next week. He handled SEC pass rushes well last year though. Remember, we averaged 40 points per game. Coach is great at calling quick reads, RPOs, etc against good pass rushing teams like UGA and Gumps. Not gonna lose sleep over an (arm)Pit defense.

We tackled much better in space last night than we did last season. Corners and safeties alike. We still gave up too many conversions on 3rd/4th downs ( 5 for 16) against a much lesser opponent...but once a guy caught the ball or especially on screen plays, the 1st man there made the tackle or at the least wrapped him up til " a host of Volunteers" could show up. Our secondary looked MUCH improved on fundamentals like wrapping up, hip turn discipline, knowing scheme, and good ball awareness gave us 2 picks.

We hit the QB 7 or 8 times but had zero sacks. That scares the crap out of me. If we have to bring blitzers to get any pressure on opposing QBs the tossup games like Pitt, FU, LSU, USCjr will be much harder to win and UGA and Bama will pick our secondary apart because that extra Blitzer will not get to their QB any more than the front 4 will...no chance of beating them without a pass rush IMO.

I have been pulling hard for Hyatt since he committed. He runs a laser timed 4.31, after 2 years of playing sparingly this is supposed to be his year. Starts in the slot now....he dropped a 45 yard bomb on a post when Hooker hit him in both hands back shoulder style. Brought the ball into his body with both hands, then fumbled it away between his legs without the DB even putting a hand on the ball or pulling on Jalins arms etc. He just flat dropped it. He is a junior FFS...if he drops more like that, i hope they sit his ass down and Squirrel or Holliday will be happy to start in the slot over him. I was really disappointed to see that BS...granted, Hyatt caught the TD on our 1st offensive play....but flat out dropping 45yd post catches will cost us ballgames in conference play. Getting open is hard. Catching a football is not. No excuse for that BS from a junior starter.

I thought Small, Wright, etc looked good at RB especially after contact. Freshman Sampson was the lower rated of the 2 new RBs by a good margin....he is shifty and very fast though and could be a star before he leaves the Hill.

Thats all I've got. Still think we go 8-4. Appreciate the responses to my last post. Think they're gonna turn off the machines on my BIL today. I held my Dads hand and prayed over him while they did the same. Life will go on for the rest of us. So glad ball season is finally here folks. Go VOLS

Dark mode is the best thing that ever happened to VN in my opinion. Saw the sticky in the FF announcing its release and changed over....have had it on since. So much easier on my eyes, and not just at night.
I already held the belief that vn has the best format and easiest to navigate message board I've ever used and now its even better

Havoc is what our defense is missing. Not just the lack of sacks. But where were the tfls, where was a pass rush leading to holds? Our defense was never in control or impacting the play calling.

We did very well against the run, held them to 74 yards, but the lack of physicality hurt us on D. I still think our ones struggled with wrapping up and bringing the guy down. There were definitely some missed tfls where the guy got away and turned a loss into a gain. +2 may not be much, but when it should be -3 that will get us dead against good teams.

DBs would get turned around or lost randomly. Didnt look sharp or focused. Hopefully just a first game thing, but who knows.

Offense looked sharp, no surprises there, OL gave Hooker time, hopefully that keeps up.

Big take aways were we won convincingly even though we werent perfect. No one got hurt. And we seemed to be able to stick to and execute the coaches plans, got lots of guys playing time. 8 touchdowns scored by 7 different guys, so it's not just Tillman.

How many of y'all are running violation in dark mode?

Glad you brought it up. I'm liking it right now. Having two bright monitors beaming light in your face at night is really tiresome, so I'm expecting it to be even better later. I read ebooks on my iPad and that's always dark mode; a fantastic improvement while reading in bed trying to drop off to sleep.

Dark mode is my default on everything if it’s available.

Apparently I was looking at the wrong jerseys last night...i kept fussing because no12 and to a lesser extent no 4 for BS were the WRs that caught seemingly all 5 conversions of 3rd down (out of 14) for the enemy as well as 12 actually getting open frequently. According to the Rhodes scholars and HOF couch coaches in the FF it was our CB1 Burrell that got roasted over and over by MAC receivers... some even saying that any time we were close to sacking their QB he heaved it at whatever WR Burrell was covering because they were picking on him having spotted a weakness...

Hope Burrell is not a defensive JG...looks good in practice and is horrible in games. We went through this last year ....Alontae rarely saw a pass to his side of the field bc opponents knew they could pick on whomever we started on the other side of the field. It killed us against Ole Miss...then in the bowl game Alontae didnt play and we gave up about 500 passing yards. 1 weak corner can ruin us in conference play....if we have to roll a safety over the top to his side all day and cannot play press man coverage, we will get torched elsewhere and not have good safety fits for run support either. Hadden looked good tackling and had a pick i believe, Turnage didnt play at all though.... i hope we can slow down some offenses this season and dont have to score 40 plus to win in every game..
