It was an ugly win, but a Top 25 win regardless

Exactly. Though certainly there are things you need to improve on you are 2-0.

And in the end it doesn't matter. No one is beating UGA until at least the SEC championship game and given Alabama's struggles probably not even then.

The battle between UT and Kentucky for the SEC E #2 spot is on. And all it means is a better bowl until the 12 team system is in place.

Uh oh .

Hooker throws a "Milton " bullet at a TE thats only 5 yards away from him....then chooses to pull the ball down and run it for no gain on 2nd AND 3rd downs?

3 games in a row now Hooker has been a little off with his accuracy. Bowl game, last week, this week...

76 yard TD makes it 10 to zero Pitt less than halfway thru the 1st quarter.

All those 10-2. Cats in the FF just crapped their pants. Lets GO VOLS. Time for a TD to make it 10 to 7....

This is why you have to have a great defense. Too many things can go wrong on offense, and some days the offense just isn't clicking. The defense is in the business of screwing things up - defense is mayhem if played right, but it takes more than what we've got on the field to do that. I still think Fulmer had the right idea with Pruitt, but was way way off on the pick. Sometimes it's almost like you need a defensive and an offensive head coach and a referee to make sure there's some balance when it comes to filling out the team. The Hype is too in on the offense; it makes sense for the first couple of years, but if he isn't getting it balanced things in another year or two, then we aren't getting back to where we should be in the football world.

One thing about it. Escaping with a win and having a lot of doubt is made a little better when a team like Marshall beats ND, Appy St beats up on TAMU, and KY takes out FL.

^^^^ me too...

Todays game took years off my life...BUT...we went on the road and even covered the spread against a top 20 team..

Notre dame lost at home

Floriduh...flarduh...lost at home to a lower ranked SEC team they were favored to beat...same gators who jumped from unranked all the way to no12 in the AP poll with a single home victory no less...never happens.

App St beat Tamu a week after losing to UNC 62 to 61...a game in which App scored 40 points in the 4th quarter, and LOST

Bama got exposed by Texas...the blueprint for how to stop their offense is now on tape..

It was a GREAT day in college football. I am exhausted from watching our Vols

We are not a good football team right now, our offense is as basic as an offense can be with no run game and our defense is simply pathetic. Was glad to see the D be able to get to the QB this game but our secondary is terrible and we can’t tackle.

Going to be a long season.

we had four touchdown passes dropped or overthrown, muffed a punt, lost a fumble, couldn't stop killing drives with penalties but still covered the spread on the road against a top 20 team and won. I'm ok with what happened yesterday

We can’t play like we did yesterday and be competitive in the SEC. The win yesterday was good and I’m happy we won but let’s be real, if they don’t make some serious improvement on both sides of the ball it’s going to be a long season.

Rest of the SEC ain't playing so hot either right now

Still say 8-4. We absolutely left 28 points on that field with 2 dropped and 2 overthrown TDS...all of which would have been from more than 40 yards. With Burrell at corner (,noticeably picked on...again ) and the secondary playing this way, we will need to hit 3/4 of those deep balls to score our 40 points a game and beat decent SEC teams.

In fairness to Hooker, he played like an above average SEC starter yesterday. I have personally watched Peyton talking Xs and Os and seen him say " love to hit those deep post routes, but reality is that is a 1 in 3 chance. You dont make a living throwing those all the time." We got used to Hooker seemingly hitting 2 out of 3 of those or better last year...he was amazing and thats why he had 31 TDs against 3 picks. Best season im history for a UT passer in many metrics including completion % and TD/INTs . I think thats why its so frustrating when he misses a couple or WR do not catch them...we have seen him perform at inhuman video game levels. His WR dropped a LOT of balls yesterday...Hell, our 1st team pre season All SEC WR dropped a 5 yard pass on 4th and 3 that hit him between the numbers, and a 45 yard TD pass that hit both of his hands and loitered around on his facemask for a second before being dribbled down the front of his jersey and eventually dropped with both hands in chase....

We simply did not execute yesterday...something we are not used to seeing from our UT offense in the Heupel era. We were sloppy on offense, and amazingly after scoring only 3 points in the 2nd half....our defense had to win the game.

We went on the road to a top 20 team with zero quit in them....spotted them a 10 to 0 lead in the first 5 minutes....and still managed to BEAT them despite a blocked punt, a muffed punt, and a fumble on our first 3 posessions of the 2nd half. We won ugly over a good ranked team for the 2nd time in Heupels first 15 games. (Kentucky last yr) When was the last time we could do THAT? Have a bad game and still beat a ranked team on the road? Fulmer was coach, right? We still have serious issues against the pass...Burrell is apparently a defensive JG that plays well in practice and is horrible in games. That will likely cost us a game or 2 in SEC play. We are still a good team though. I still think we go 8-4...maybe even 9-3 since the gators have issues also...we should end the season ranked top 25 and go to a good bowl game. Heupel is a good coach making good progress in year 2 (!!!)

Just my 2.5 cents. Go VOLS

Im happy with the win but I did NOT enjoy watching the game at all. Frustrating almost the whole way. So many chances to put them out of their misery and we don't do it. A muffed punt and blocked punt both when our defense was clearly not going to allow them to march down the field...

Part of my unhappiness during the game is i was watching a stream hosted by a gator fan who wouldn't stfu in the fourth quarter

I agree. Even when we managed to outscore them by 17 points in the last minute of the 1st qtr and the 2nd qtr, i was still unable to relax at all or enjoy sending their starting QB to the showers early. Hope he is fine today..watching the replay, his backup had a terrible knee twist under his body and likely tore an ACL etc. I think Pitt is a well coached team with "no quit in them" and was honored to go the distance with them. We dont win that game with Slovis playing all 4 quarters yesterday...but i think its because we had a bad day offensively, not because they are a better team. They shut our offense down for 3 quarters like only Bama and UGA last season have ever been able to do under Heupel though, and with much less talent. Holding us to 27 points in regulation with most of their starting Dline getting hurt or not playing at all due to injury. Thats a well coached defense and if Slovis is OK they will finish 1st or 2nd in their division in the ACC from what i can tell.

Ha. Got off subject bro...but anyway...i didnt enjoy that game either. Not because it was a close game, but because we killed ourselves with turnovers and special teams issues. There is mucho on film to discuss today...unlike under the Gump or Jones however, i believe we have good coaches in place to fix these issues in practice. Other than Burrell. I dont know what to do about him....remember the last DB we had that got torched and picked on so badly,? Coleman i believe? Yep looked it up. Justin Coleman, like Burrell was picked on as a Vol so much he personally cost us games giving up late TDs...it was unbearable. He is still in the NFL and plays for the Seahawks...7 years. Unbelievable. He got torched so badly here we just called him "toast" in the FF...Burrell is THAT bad. He needs to sit.

You get the impression that the defense plays like robbing Peter to pay Paul. That's probably true to some extent in all football defenses, but better ones usually manage not to completely give up in one aspect to hit the opposing offense in another. It seemed like during the entire offseason the Hype was looking for more pass catchers and not thinking much about replacing what we lost in the defensive secondary. Yesterday looked like one of those days when the offense simply wasn't clicking, and the defense barely made the difference. I really miss the days with players like Jack Reynolds and Steve Kiner - guys who could disrupt an offense and didn't need to borrow a guy from somewhere else on the field. I still believe the NCAA rules makers have hobbled defenses with rules to make offenses seem more exciting, so maybe coaches today do the best they can with the givens of the game.

I don't know why, but I was never that worried about the outcome of the game. I figured we would win by 7 points and that was my guess in the pick-em and that's where we ended up, I just didn't see an OT game in the mix. I guess the Florida game will show me where we really are because the entire league seems somewhat unsteady right now, but that's what you expect early in the season.

Folks keep saying this but to be honest, the SEC hasn't looked fantastic thus far.

I really think they are keeping the run game vanilla on purpose. Especially with the lack of qb runs. You started to see hooker keep it late yesterday with the game on the line. I hope we are saving that wrinkle for Florida. It also let's us develop our other weapons beyond Hooker, which we need.

At least that's what me and my orange sunglasses are believing.

I wandered in there last night and got called a troll. I forgot what the good old days were all about.

I initially stumbled into the VN Football Forum, and then found my way into the Political Forum. It's a lot saner here - and that's saying something considering a lot of you guys are a bit iffy. :D
