While vacationing or narco trafficking? Because it's two different experiences

Funny you should ask. We ran a 50 ft sport fish from Bimini to Ft Myers and never got stopped. They used to have a thing where you could call and "report" yourself kind of like TSA pre check. We totally forgot and never got stopped.

Well, Bimini back around through keys to Fort Myers. Did it this year. Fished out of Chub Cay over to Cat Island
I'm doing a VRBO in Georgetown next March. I'm thinking of taking my CC down to FT Lauderdale and run it over. My son and SIL would accompany me. My biggest concern is the Gulf Stream. It's not a huge boat but it isn't a bay boat. It's a 24' Tidewater 232LXF. We chose March because I've read the weather is more settled but I've also read the GS can get knarly that time of year.

You'll be fine in a 24' CC, just pick your day. Lots of traffic through that area but it wouldn't hurt to have an EPIRB.

Look into CBP ROAM CBP Reporting Offsite Arrival – Mobile (ROAM)

I was going to buy an epirb. The boat is a 2018 but everything on it is brand new. I put a 250HP Honda with electric shift, seastar optimus electric steering, Garmin reactor autopilot, garmin fantom radar, twin garmin 12" displays. The boat should be reliable. Charting shows about a 10hr run at 30mph. Can you average 30 on an average crossing?

Ft Lauderdale to Bimini is only about 50 miles, shouldn't take you more than a couple of hours. Miami is a little closer, 1.5 hours. A passport isn't required but you should have it just in case, they take greenbacks there also.

Autopilot is a game changer - perfect for that run.

I thought you had to have a passport and check into customs?

Were you the honor student at bragging camp?

Nice rig.

Kind of my business thing, you know? Bought it after it had been stolen and stripped. The son and I did the refit. Turned out nice. I'm already wanting to sell it for a bigger one. I'd like to have something in the 30' range that has a cabin. I'm looking at the Robolo R305. It's a walk-around. That's about as big as I would want to tow. The beam on those is over 10' which technically requires a permit. I don't want to leave a boat in Florida.

I’m seeing more and more CCs out on the lakes here in TN. I wouldn’t mind having one myself.

They're good for taking on the wake of these wake board boats. I'm enjoying mine. I love that autopilot. We're fine tuning it but for the most part you can pick a point on the chart and it will take you there. During busy times you have to take back control to avoid other boats but for the most part it does the driving for you.

Does it sync up with your chart plotter to keep you in the channels? That would be a must on OHL.

Absolutely. It calculates the route based on water depth and paints a magenta line. It follows that line. You can even do routing on your phone/tablet at home and then sync it with your garmin display to use.

I had to run up the lake last Friday to survey a boat. It was about a 10 mile run. Despite it being very a twisty route, I never touched the wheel.

And I thought the GPS synced trolling motors were things of brilliance.

Auto pilot would be handy. We run up river towards Hartsville and Carthage quite a bit so it's not unusual to have a 30-45 minute run each way, heck even going to Hendersonville is a 30 minute run, having auto pilot would surely free up the drinking hand.

It's tricky to add to an existing boat. The steering has to be replaced or modified. If you have cable steering, you have to replace it. If you have hydraulic, a pump can be installed. Electric steering is becoming more popular. Basically it uses an electric actuator to turn the motor. The Garmin reactor autopilot is a small box that's plugged in. A little programming and you're good to go. Obviously, you have to have a garmin display as well.

I'd never add it to my current boat buuuuut if we ever upgrade..
