Well I'm really on the fence with the whole Gruden thing. On one hand, the whole mania with a lot of the fan base, I can't really understand it...other than the championship Bucs team he coached, which some say was a roster he essentially inherited from Tony Dungy (which is not entirely true, he did keep Dungy's defense mostly intact but completely retooled the offense with 9 new starters, so this claim is largely debunked), but apart from that championship, he has been a picture of mediocrity as a head coach with a career record of 95-81, didn't manage to win a single playoff game after that championship season, has never head-coached a snap at the college level and of course was famously fired by the Bucs in '08. Despite all that he is for some reason almost universally touted online as a brilliant football mind. All that said, a championship NFL coach I guess is always attractive to college programs. I have to say his head coaching career to this point does not merit his becoming the highest paid coach in the history of the sport (reference rumors that we are prepared to offer him 10 milliion+), but Currie seems to have bought into the fan base mania and the notion that Gruden could be Tennessee's Saban. All that said I think the name Gruden, sensibly or not, would carry a lot of clout and recruiting power at the collegiate level, especially in the now talent rich Southeast. I suppose part of his appeal for many fans are his past and current family connections to UT, which kind of give him a native son appeal. Also I can't help but wonder if his recent teasing of Vol fans amounts to a lot of trolling, amounts to simply using us, to try and boost his stock in ESPN contract negotiations or maybe even the NFL. If he doesn't come, then I imagine that's exactly what he's been doing, which may be standard in the business, but with his knowing how enamored with him many of our fans are, that would make me very upset, and I would never wish again for him to come, no matter what. He would essentially be Lane Kiffin to me at that point. Nonetheless if he shows up at a presser wearing orange and commits to Tennessee for the long haul, then I will stand behind and support him as I would any coach in the beginning. Ultimately I just want to see us win championships and pursue a program of integrity, and if he is the guy to make that happen, then I'm ready to welcome him with open arms. In any case, we should know soon...
