It's been discussed before. Owners of pro sports teams buy them because they are playthings for the owners, not because they make money. Haslam could probably invest his billion somewhere else and get much greater returns than what he will with the Browns.

Perhaps Haslam, along with Thornton and others, just loves UT, and wants to see us win.

Catch the game yesterday?

Oh come on jay. It was a honest question.

Damn.

I own a lawn and landscaping company and starting a dump truck business after the first of the year.

Good point...I just feel that if Gruden really wanted an NFL job, he would've taken another by now. Hopefully he's sick of the egos and sees CFB as the only "challenge" that would satisfy him.

The starting point of my view on this is that Gruden is a seasoned NFL head coach with a super bowl ring. How many guys go from that to the NCAA, no matter which program it is.

Any coach would agree that the NFL is a step up (if you're good enough to hack it, unlike say Steve Spurrier). The goal is to advance your career and take on the biggest challenge, which is always going to be in the big boy league.

To me, this makes it easier to believe that if 3 or 4 NFL teams wanted Gruden, then he would prefer that over any college team, not just UT.

You can say "if he wanted an NFL job he would have had one by now". But you can also say "if he wanted the UT job, he had two chances already to take it."

Not trying to be a downer, just offering up where my perspective comes from when I read all this stuff.

I also think that Saban changed things in the sense that it is now probably considered a bit more fashionable for a NFL coach to go the college route, whereas that used to be considered a downgrade.

very good point. he is getting the $ and the fame. its going to be the norm, soon. hope we take this opportunity to jump ahead of the pack.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't gruden say he wanted to coach and help young players?

UT player at the Fresh Market who said he heard that Tennessee has offed Gruden $30 mil over 6 years..this sounds like it might be legit,..not sure if the guy worked at the FM or not,or even if this makes a difference in it's validity..

Those who say money will determine may be right. But after seeing those QB Camp episodes in ESPN and along with the camp he runs in FL. In my opinion he wants to "coach" players. For that college is the place to be.

The NFL is cutthroat, look at Couglin at NY. He is always on the hot seat two to three years after winning the Super Bowl. He has to win another to get an extension to stay around.

Also see names like Fisher, Fox, and Morris. One bad year and you are toast.

I am a browns fan and vols fan.

I want gruden in Tennessee Orange not Cleveland Orange.

I will be attending a group meeting with Bill Haslam next Tuesday afternoon the 30th. Assuming all is going according to plan Dooley will no longer be coach and Gruden may or may not be hired at that point. Are there any questions that you guys/gals would like me to ask him for you?

Can I have a loan?

I could see how it goes. Haslam calls up Gruden, saying I'll offer you $5.5 million to coach for the Vols. Gruden says he will think about it. They exchange pleasantries and hang up.

Ten minutes later, Haslam calls up Gruden, saying I will give you $5 million to coach for the Browns. Gruden says, "No thanks. Tennessee just offered me $5.5." Haslam says "Ok, $6 million then." Gruden says, "I'll consider, let me go back and talk to UT".

Sounds like they ran into a former player that has an account on this board.
