I would think about it differently. Haslam OWNS the Browns now. Which means he makes money from the franchise. He doesnt make any money off of UT, in fact he gives money (loses money) to UT.
He is a very smart business man and if he feels like Gruden is the right man to manage his new investment and make him more money then thats where he would prefer Gruden to be.
That's not a slight to UT, its just being a good businessman.
Lets just say almost every coach and "high ups" in the AD deal with my company for a certain need and leave it at that. I really cannot think of a better way to put it without being obvious. That's why the 3pm thing someone posted yesterday surprised me because there was something we had to get done by 3pm involving a need for something that would point to someone new coming aboard. I know that's vague, but the only way I know to put it.
The Cleveland Browns new GM (Joe Banner) is VERY involved. Not sure Gruden is interested in that.
I beg to differ. Randy Learner was a horrible owner. There is no way Gruden would have coached for a guy who didnt give two sh*ts for the Browns.
Haslam is a whole different animal for Cleveland now.
This comes from someone I know that is VERY tied to the program -
"Good to hear from you. Hope you and family are doing ok. Yes the offer is on the table. On the front page of the News Sentinel today, the cost to buy out all of the coaches including Coach Dooley was documented. The announcement will come after the South Carolina game if there is one. Coach Gruden is yet to sign the offer. It is 5 years @ 5.5M a year. If he signs it Dooley is gone before the end of the season. There is a lot of upset people here as can imagine. They are playing bad but what is worse is their lack of basic fundamentals. Dooley has not helped himself in the community. He comes across as a bit arrogant and full of himself. Personally I like him but he is a bit different and not very engaging. My best to all."
Just my $.02.
Possibly Meyer as well...the next "tier" would be Stoops, Miles, Spurrier, and Brown probably. Regardless, a certifiable Top Five coach in terms of "branding" would be HUGE.
Well, it's double from a total money standpoint...not the length. A contract like that will greatly increase the pressure and scrutiny on him, but I guess that's what you sign up for. The only bright side is that no one will be calling for his head after three years...regardless of record.
Question most of us agree if it cost 5 mil a year to get Gruden we do it. What if he says (insert NFL team) is offering 6 mil. Do we pony up for 7? Or at that point do we search elsewhere?
I also think that Saban changed things in the sense that it is now probably considered a bit more fashionable for a NFL coach to go the college route, whereas that used to be considered a downgrade.
Why would they "ask" Mike Holmgren to "retire" if they were going after Gruden? Holmgren is one of Gruden's mentors, and dear friend. Keeping him would have raised their chances of landing their target exponentially. I don't see Gruden as the type of guy that would step on his mentor's toes like that.
