Guys, I'm no big booster nor do I have contacts but just following football for my entire life while living in Ohio I have gotten to witness other programs hire new coaches. This happens all the time before the hire is done.
Look at Saban "I will not be the coach of Bama."

Also look at Kelley going to ND. He constantly denied it the hole second half of the season when everyone new negotiations were taking place and he was going to go. But there were also rumors that ND did not reach an agreement until the end of the season to cover up the hype when Cincinnati was doing good and made it to a BCS bowl. But in the end well hes at ND.

Just my opinion TFWIW and I still have hope hes coming.

But...he said we would never spend more than 2 million to get a coach. lol

Exactly, thus why said booster hung up the phone at that time. The point I'm making is those who hold the purse strings were once aware of the amount it would take for Gruden to listen. How much, if any, that price has fluctuated over time or his potential interest in the job has changed I'm obviously unaware of other than what I read. In my opinion, it's a definite positive that a trusted poster such as Larry said he was contacted during a prior search, and a price was discussed to get him to listen. The positive being if money is no longer an object as some have said then, according to Larry, Gruden has shown a willingness to listen about the job. If the amount Larry stated still stands it all depends upon the right people willing to engage in talks at that price.

Jay, what yearly donation amount would it take for you to consider someone a big enough donor to have any influence/knowledge on the decision making process?

I know someone who makes what I would consider a fairly large donation, but without having a donation amount to reference, I don't know if this person would be considered as big a donor as I or he thinks he is. I never see this guys name mentioned on here, so I am leaning towards the guy having an inflated sense of what his donation level is.

IMO, millions in order to really have decision making influence.

This X1000. You can't trust anything they say until a new coach is in place. Of course he would turn it down as well. You don't want anything out there like what happened with Auburn going after Petrino while Tubberville was still the coach and everyone finding out

jmo, but some of the louder donors are the younger ones (under 50) that have come into money in the last few years. They don't have the pull, input or info that they claim to have, but speak the most about buyouts, cancelling their boxes, pulling plane use, etc from the program.
The quiet ones are the ones involved in the process.

Nouveau riche...... What can you do about them?

I tend to agree with you here.

I've been away because of the abundance of negativity this site is bound to breed like bacteria on a sponge, but it's just nice to see that we haven't learned anything from the previous two job openings.

John Gruden is very likely not going to be the coach of the Vols next year, or ever. Do I know that with 100% certainty and a long list of internal sources? No. But Lovie Smith has been our coach, Randy Shannon has been our coach, and Will Muschamp has been our coach if you listen to every source out there.

I haven't read this thread in its entirety and I'm not going to - if something changes, great. I don't expect it to and refuse to believe a word out of anyone's mouth, twitter, or VN account until a "new coaching hire" press conference airs live on my television screen.

Dooley noted, thanks for the contribution and the bump.

Jay beside the Haslam's and Thunder who are some other "big" donors who keep their hands in the proverbial pot? I have a close relative who is a relatively big alumni donor who does not get involved in the workings of the UT machine and wouldn't. Thought I would throw out a question while we wait.

Is his plane still on its way to Knoxville?

The Check-into-Cash founder in Cleveland is a big UT donor...he donated the money for the new aquatic center.

Please see my lengthy post above. My answer is there.

Thank you sir. I understand. I really hope it is just a smokescreen. I like Dooley personally. He has represented us with class, and made alot of positive changes. We are a much better program now, than when he arrived. However, I feel he needs more time, and at UT, we want to win now. So I think he may end up in the category of "stepping stone coach" which would be a coach who calms a program down that is in shambles, rebuilds the foundation, and makes the situation better, so that a coach like Gruden, Saban, or an established coach can come here with not so much work to do as three years prior. I believe EVENTUALLY that Dooley could be a Nick Saban. And I only hope that when he finds that winning formula, if we are in need, he will come back. But for now, he needs to find a place like Texas Tech, Arizona State (not saying the need new coaches, just picking schools that aren't 100% football crazy and are patient) where they will allow him time to build a program, and win. Saban was in the same boat at MSU when he started figuring out his formula to win. Dooley just needs a little more time, but unfortunately he most likely won't get it here.:loco:

This. Alan Jones. He has a full sized regulation field at his home that still to this day, no one can convince me he didnt hold some dead period practices there before.

If Gruden declined 5 Million then you go back and offer 7 million!!! Gruden will be coach for the Vols in 2013. Ive spent way to much time on this thread for this not too happen . I hate Dooley. Dooley sucks as a coach. Sal sucks his defense cant even stop a nose bleed. Gtuden 2013!!!!
