Official Jon Gruden Thread VI

The former players also are living in the past. They basically want Fulmer 2. The problem is that ship has sailed in college football for the most part. Gruden will not come here and then leave the university hanging. He will be here as long as it takes to turn the ship around and be successful, then he will bolt. As long as he gets the program back to championship caliber, who really cares, because at that point they can go out and hire anybody to be replace him.

The former players probably also like Cutcliffe or Fulmer, which I've said I'm not crazy about but would be the best realistic choices after Gruden to stabilize the program and fix the university issues. However, both of those options are potentially more temporary than Gruden because of their age.

Fulmer 2 would get his arse handed to him in this league now just like the first one was starting to get.

By Fulmer 2 I meant a coach who dedicated his entire life to the university/football program and would stay for 10-15 years. That doesn't exist anywhere anymore.

Sent out a bunch of copies, waiting for a lot of replies. Biggest confirm so far was Dan.

Can i get some usernames on these so I can update the confirmed list?

I agree with all this. The players hung out all afternoon waiting to hear an absolute yesterday that never came. Any report that the players all have been told in any sort of team meeting is false. I heard it all afternoon and evening yesterday, but today that rumor has proven 100% false.

I truly believe Dooley has been told, and he may have told a player or two but there was no team meeting with Hart yesterday unless two that I know the families of were left out of it.

IMO, it's very risky for Hart to "tell" Dooley. There is no need to stir a hornets nest that is already a deadly swarm. The writing is on the mirror for Dooley. As I understand it, Hart is a very quiet kinda guy anyway...be seen but not heard...kinda guy (per Treece).

You hit the nail on the head for players over 50-60 years of age, but not the former players that are under 40 and younger. They want to win, have an air of excitement to the program, and be nationally relevant again. This is my age group, and the age group of most I know. I never hear anyone yearn for the Fulmer years over again. Now with old heads all bets are off.

yo carter.....

Like many Volunteers that post here I am over all this garbage. Regardless of whether Dooley has not been formally relieved of his duties, talking heads will talk. While Dooley "twists in the wind" the Football Program (the prized bell cow) is falling lower and lower and lower. How bad will it be if the Vols lose to Vandy or to UK or both?

I would venture to say that Tennessee would beat Vandy and UK if they fired Dooley today! I understand that professional decorum must be maintained in these situations however it should not be allowed to tarnish the reputation of Tennessee which is what is occurring in the media and in the Volnation. Regardless of the ripple affect that would likely occur if Dooley was removed today, he should in fact be released publicly! Even if some of the "fall back" names are currently coaching that does not change anything.

Coaches being fired mid-season is not a new concept, it happens all the time. And the results are mixed.

I agree, make Chaney interim. The kids love him and would do almost anything to get wins these last two weeks. I FULLY expect to lose at Vandy with Dooley on the sidelines.

Cool
I appreciate the info you bring. Keep it coming!
Btw, good looking kids in that pic I'd love for my daughter to meet a few players. I don't have ANY connections at UT.

Its pretty cool, my son didn't realize how cool until this year when he started paying attention and realized all these guys on TV are the same guys he got to hang out with the last couple years. He is a VFL now, and only at 7.
