Hamilton sold them on a name. Everyone wanted a "NAME" to help salvage our recruiting class. This alone is why Hamilton overlooked Sumlin, in favor of Dooley.I'm sorry but the people that let Phil go after SC and also hired Dooley are still a part of this search. We may be missing Mike Hamilton but I doubt he'd have made those moves without their blessing. Best i can tell is they've gotten wiser at this if the rumors are true but that doesn't mean they're perfect.
Sumlin, at the time, was not a BIG name coach. Dooley wasn't either, but his last name was recognizable and his connections to Saban and the SEC, is why Hamilton loverlooked the most critical component of any hire....in any profession. Successful history at the position.
Dooley didn't have it. Nor did Cutcliff. Sumlin did. That is who Hamilton should have hired, and that's who I was hoping for at that point in time (wanted Patterson or Willingham, but I knew Hamilton was too cheap to make them a serious offer).
