The possibility of hiring Jon Gruden, which had gained traction early last week, now has faded. A proven commodity such as Bob Stoops of Oklahoma is an intriguing possibility, albeit a long shot. Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher may or may not be in play, depending on your sources and the time of day you ask.

Beyond that, the list includes the usual suspects — Gary Patterson of TCU, Charlie Strong of Louisville, Al Golden of Miami and on and on.
