I can't speak to a conspiracy or that there is still some game being played. I know 100% that Schiano was/is to be hired and that it has caught everyone off guard. Even those that would have thought to be in Currie's inner circle. It is also baffling to those involved because in the vetting of Schiano, Currie was told multiple times that he was a bad person and a terrible person to work for/with. Most even thought Schiano's name had been passed over.
I am going to be honest here. I want(ed) Gruden as bad as the next, but always stayed at a low percentage because I couldn't get straight answers out of anyone. What I do think is that the reaction to Schiano is purely based on a terrible job by John Currie. There are still some in the football world that think that Schiano is a valuable football coach. Ohio State apparently vetted him enough to hire him. The issue is the way that John Currie has conducted this search. He has represented himself the whole time as someone who was in control and had his top targets in the pocket. Whether that was ever Gruden, I didn't know, but he carried himself as someone about to strut into the party. If Schiano was his guy, or we started falling through the list, then Currie should have been communicating. If Jon Gruden wasn't in play, he should have squashed it. If Petersen, Patterson and that strata weren't in play, he should have been saying so. What has happened is he acted like he had a big fish on the line and just tried to feed us a guppy. Would we all be freaking out if we were aware with how far down the list of top candidates we were? I don't know. I know that there is now concern over his Penn St. stuff, but I see the true reaction as this isn't who we were "promised." This isn't the type of coach that Currie led us to believe he had in his pocket...and for that we are revolting.
Tennessee wants, expects, and supports the program to make a big hire. Currie has failed on the hire and was irresponsible with the conducting of that search. He needs to go.
EDIT: If you have "sources" that have been quiet. Call them up. Flood gates are open. People are livid over there at 1419 Lake Loudon Blvd.
