Media outlets do not get a “ green light “. If any of them had legit information you better believe they’d be the first to rush and get it out there.

That’s not necessarily true. If the information was provided by UT, they could have asked for an embargo, meaning the article wouldn’t publish until UT wanted it to. I don’t think this is the case in this scenario, but that’s how an official announcement could work and how ESPN could technically “break” the news. UT could provide an exclusive on the information to ESPN and request the story break at a certain time. I’m in PR and do this with big announcements all the time.
