That’s not necessarily true. If the information was provided by UT, they could have asked for an embargo, meaning the article wouldn’t publish until UT wanted it to. I don’t think this is the case in this scenario, but that’s how an official announcement could work and how ESPN could technically “break” the news. UT could provide an exclusive on the information to ESPN and request the story break at a certain time. I’m in PR and do this with big announcements all the time.

I'm sure others will have picked up on this but ESPN was about the only media that would go silent or switch topics when the grumors were discussed.
