That’s not necessarily true. If the information was provided by UT, they could have asked for an embargo, meaning the article wouldn’t publish until UT wanted it to. I don’t think this is the case in this scenario, but that’s how an official announcement could work and how ESPN could technically “break” the news. UT could provide an exclusive on the information to ESPN and request the story break at a certain time. I’m in PR and do this with big announcements all the time.

Wouldn’t ESPN be first because Jon Gruden would let his employer know he wasn’t coming back?

Maybe what he meant was Currie is acting like we are about to hire Mullen, but then he comes in and offered Gruden one last ditch effort and Gruden accepts making him look like a hero.
