I think the whole argument is ridiculous. Why can't you strive to be great at everything--academics and athletics included. Why does one have to be exclusive of the other?

It doesn't. Just look at Stanford. But, they have a pot load of money. For UT it is a matter of the "right balance". However, I have no problem with Cheeks academic goals. Further, Research is one of the more important criteria for top tier institutions. Why? Because those that excel in research are able to impart more thorough knowledge and thinking skills to students.

You are right, and that was kind of my point. I would think most would agree, but this is in response to Cheek basically inferring that athletics will not bring down academics. It doesn't have to.

But, some have said that Cheek is more into a research-based institution, and I don't care about that.

UT is a good-sized school. I don't see why we can't do it all. Cheek is shortsighted to even say that.
