I'd like to paint a picture for all of you Gruders out there. 1)The guy's an NFL coach. In the NFL, you don't have to go on recruiting trips and kiss the read ends of 18-year-olds, you don't have to put up with athletic directors, college presidents, etc. You tell your players what's expected and, if they don't perform, you fire them. Plain and simple.
2) The guy makes 3.5 million per year doing Monday night football. He can sit in a chair and talk about the game going on and second guess everything that the coaches do, without consequences.
Now, would you, if you had his job and were 50, drop down to the college ranks and basically start a career making the same money, doing 10 times the work, having to put up with college crap (see 1 above)?!
John Gruden will never be a college football coach and I doubt that he'll ever be a pro coach.
Who knows when this thread will be closed but it has been a lot of fun. It is sad in a way...we will all likely continue to post on VN but we won't have this unified gathering place known as the "Official John Gruden Thread". As I see you guys in the recruiting forum and the football forum I will be reminded of these long hours of hoping, dreaming, and obsessing. Whether you were an OG, a logical skeptic, an unabashed follower, a troll, or an "it ain't happenin'" it has been fun. This collection of people are a real testament to the greatness of the Vol fan base. We are Vol football...people in the media tease and ridicule fans but without us the players don't have scholarships, and the coaches and media don't have jobs...sure we get overly emotional and irrational at times but we are the backs upon which this thing is built. Thanks for the memories and I'll see you around.
RE-POST of my post on Patrick's thread
I hold nothing against Butch Jones.... seems like a good guy and I would have taken the job were I him as well.
I will as always support my team, the players and the new coach, and will of course hope this new hire works out for us all. I will not support any AD who thinks this was a move up to improve our program. It may work out, but we are by dam Tennessee, and we deserve the best.
This proud program once stood out in the NCAA as one of the elite and première of the county, today we are a head scratcher, and a curiosity. We are brought to this lowly state not by a fan base, or players or even a coach. We come to this lonely spot by an incompetent former Ad and now a former Bama, and former Gator troll...who has created an atmosphere where less than perfection is not only accepted but tolerated and now expected by our fan base. The same fan base who only a few short years ago dared to dream we could be the BEST in the nation...because we were. Today we simply fall in line as understudies of the Bama's, Ga's, and LSU's of the world ask ourselves why we every believed to start with.
How are the might fallen from their former state.... I lay it all at the feet of the Ad and Chancellor now presiding on the once mighty hill
My stand as a Grudenite was based on a simple belief, one that should we COULD, SHOULD and WOULD be Great again. Was I believeing something that did not happen, Yes I was, and today I wear my banner not in shame, but in pride..... of not a coach who turned us down, but of a dream of excellence that in my heart lives on till I breathe my last breath.
VOL FOREVER .Go Vols
Don't you think it's time to move on? The rumors and spec was fun. The crash was fun. Everybody gets the "I told ya so" thingy.
Go Vols.
Yes, it is time to move on.
But where? This thread has had more information and relevant discussions about UT football than any thread I've found over the last weeks.
I'm a newbie here on Volnation, and probably will dissappear until the next coaches search, or the next time a coach lets the clock run out and play into overtime and put the game in the hands of a defense that gave up 721 yards against Troy state (damn these Alabama teams!) and I need to vent. You'll see me back then.
I never did figure out what OG means. Oh well..
GO VOLS. Later dudes
I feel today all of my 35 yrs of memories Of Tenn Football has been tarnished. I was in the streets of New Orleans in 85 I was there when Bo said no more . Sat in the pouring rain just to scream for the vols never left a game early no matter the score. But on this day I must part and move on . I hope Jones does a great job but I will no longer support a school that will not put some effort in hiring a coach . I have bled orange since my first game in 77 vs Duke but I have nothing left . I was upset with the Dooley hire but I got over it and supported him till the end ,it was time for him to go . Good bye Vols and Volnation I will miss you !!
I know. It's hard to believe. But, there it is.
You and I, we good?
:hi:
