Official Republican Presidential Debate August 23, 2023

My issue with political debates is that the time the candidates are allotted to answer questions aren't sufficient to fully frame and answer the questions. Most political issues aren't black and white. There are shades of gray that require explanation that can't be delivered in the allotted time frame. Also, the person that is ultimately determined by the press to be the winner of the debate is usually whomever delivered the most clever catch phrase of the night. I don't give a damn about clever slogans.

Debates aren’t really about policy positions. You can tell by the questions, the answers, and the results that end up at 1600.

I have to admit I wasn't thinking much about Reagan and his CIA works of art. I think his greatest failing was that he was a great delegator but really bad at picking the people he relied on. Reagan was an excellent communicator, but some of the policy stuff his minions sold him was real garbage. I still like the hard line on the Soviet relationship and the results; that to me was the highlight of his presidency. It could have been sheer luck, too - that the Soviet Union was ready to fall and he was around to give it a nudge. It would take little to convince me that certainly by the second term his health - particularly Alzheimer's - was a problem.

Interestingly enough the book deals with that very subject. The US government went to great lengths to determine just how much money they needed to spend in Afghanistan to collapse the Soviet economy. They wanted to spend enough but not too much. Unfortunately they didn’t have good souraces in the Politburo and didn’t realize that the Soviet economy was done by 1985 and they just kept pumping unneccessary money in. It’s fascinating.

Skipped the whole thread so sorry if already posted but I think Trump skipping the debate was a slightly bad move on his part and probably great for the GOP.

It wasn’t a total clown show, there were some serious people, and seems like there was something for everybody, including the Trump base.

Not sure Vivek stealing the show early is bad for most of the others because I assume he’s primarily peeling fatigued voters from Trump.

I only watched bits and pieces, but it sounds like Haley did well. Unfortunately, I’m very confident that the GOP will repeat its 2016 mistake. Instead of rallying behind one candidate to go against Trump, too many of the candidates with no chance at all of winning will stay in the race, basically guaranteeing Trump the nomination.

Maybe so, but I’m not sure Trump makes it through the primary. He’s old and fat and staring down the barrel of potential jail time. Some states may try to keep him off the ballot and he may just die.

He won't go to jail. That isn't the real intent of the kangaroos

link to his conviction? I know he lost a civil suit, but I don't remember him being convicted of anything like that. If I am not mistaken, if he had, he would already be ineligible for election because I am pretty sure thats a felony.
Shhhhhh turbo's on a roll

If she accepted, then she was clearly too stupid to be a POTUS to begin with.
Yeah Trump should follow the Democrat model and choose someone dumber than a bag of hammers to ensure he wouldn't be assassinated.

You may be right about him not being the picture of good health. He’s not a young man and he packing some extra weight.

I don’t think jail time is the purpose of these indictments. Maybe it does come to that in the end, but I think the Dems are really just trying to keep him in the news 24/7 to keep his supporters riled up. They don’t want him to fade away into obscurity. He’s too good of a villain and too vulnerable of an opponent.

13 Million Americans tuned in for cable network's first Republican debate - while Tucker Carlson's X Interview with Donald Trump Gets 238 Million 'views' ... and counting

The Fox-hosted Republican primary debate was easily bested by the person who wasn't there, Donald Trump, as the former president's interview with Tucker Carlson on X easily saw more eyeballs.

Fox announced on Thursday that almost 13 million people tuned in to the first Republican deabte, which was broadcast from 9-11pm ET on Wednesday.

Carlson's interview with Trump had, by 6pm ET Thursday, received 238 million 'views'. However, it is not a direct comparison. X counts a 'view' each time a user scrolls past the video, even without watching any of it.

Fox declared on Thursday the debate was 'the most-watched, non-sporting event cable telecast of the year' - but cable news executives will certainly be unsettled by the social-media numbers.

I don't care about character and integrity. I want a good president that shrinks the .gov and pays the bills

So what you really want is these two guys and Congress to do their jobs. Can't say I'm really shocked about your stance on character or integrity.

Nikki Haley Is the Best Trump Alternative

Opinion | Nikki Haley Is the Best Trump Alternative

Excerpt: Wednesday’s debate illustrated the cancer that is eating away at the Republican Party. It’s not just Trumpian immorality. The real disease is narcissistic hucksterism. The real danger is that he’s creating generations of people, like Vivek Ramaswamy, who threaten to dominate the G.O.P. for decades to come.
