OFFICIAL Tennessee SEC Media Days thread

If last year's UT played last year's USCjr 10 times, USCjr would win 9 of them. They have quality depth all over the field, so losing Clowney, a guy who mailed it in for most of last year, won't mean much. They return all of the starting Oline, have a stud RB, and we're playing them at their place. Would love to beat them 2 years in a row, but I just don't see that happening with all the question marks we have on defense and in our 2 deep. Jmo

I'm sorry but saying losing clowney wont mean much to USC is just laughable. Maybe clowney did mail it in at times last season, but there's no denying that his presence on the field demanded extra attention and respect. He made a huge impact simply by being on the field.
Also, they just lost their all time winningest qb. That is never easily replaced. It will be a tough game for sure, but the vols certainly have a shot.

Why don't you come down here and do something about it. Or up here. Or over here. Not sure where you are. But I think it'd be fun to argue in person. If you and your wife are ever near Chattanooga, holler. My husband and I will take you to dinner.

Edit: You're in Arkansas. OK, probably don't get over this way. Nevermind. :)

Will be in Knoxville over the Thanksgiving holiday actually, but will probably be busy with family stuff as you will. Appreciate the offer though! :hi:

I would venture to say that the absence of Clowney will not make a significant difference in their defensive statistics or the w/l column by the end of the year.

It will be interesting to see. USC definitely has a lot of talent still, but like I said, replacing two of the best players they've ever had. I think the vols make it a game. I don't see this as a certain loss. We will find out though, huh fade? Can't wait for football time in Tennessee!

Usce also lost their dt QUARLES ... The 2 best defensive players on that team.

Oh believe me, I hope I'm so wrong about USCjr and UGA. And hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things......and no good thing ever dies.

They lost Clowney.

We lost our entire starting O-line.

They lost their best QB in program history.

We return zero starters on the D-line. We lost 2 Sr LBs. We lost our kicker and punter.

We lost more, but somehow this is an advantage for us?

Show me where I said anything about advantages? I said the vols have a shot, and we do.

Losing Connor Shaw isn't as big of a deal as many of you want to believe. Dylan Thompson has seen significant PT be it against Clemson, Michigan, or UCF. And don't forget who is coaching him.

I have no idea what the ultimate impact of losing Clowney will be, but I'm pretty sure their DC will have a plan.

Its good man. How you think we do this season?

5-7 at worst 7-5 at best, likely 6-6.

The lines, LBs, and punter are my biggest concerns.

Always possible for us to win more than one toss up game or upset, but with a team this young it could easily go the other way in a game we're favored to win.

I think we match up better with them having Thompson at QB. Shaw, like all mobile QBs could cause havoc( even though this year our d will be faster and more talented everywhere). We lose a lot on the d line but the players replacing them are more talented, just need a little experience. USC has more talent then us but the gap is not as big as many think. I don't know if we get this game but it will be close, it won't be a blow out. I think Worley will be as good or better then Thompson.

How can you possibly say that? My expectation is 6-6 with a bowl appearance, so how can they never meet my expectations? That doesn't make any sense.

Ya know, I routinely get creamed for being a negavol, but you can pull a number of threads from last season and find me defending Butch after some tough losses where other posters were hammering him. You, Volly, are making the mistake that by not going full throttle sunshine pumping in the offseason means you're just a negavol. So tired of that BS.
Fade you have good insight from time to time and I think your opinions of the upcoming season mirror mine. With that said, I'm pretty sure you fired the first shot at the "sunshine pumpers" in this thread.

Who cares is some people are overly optimistic? If it helps them get more excited about he season, I say more power to them.

I think they're going to be disappointed, but we're all on the same team and I don't believe anyone thinks they're above the program. I also don't consider you to be a negavol, although there are a few that frequent this site who will never be happy with the results no matter how positive.

Anyway, just my two cents that no one asked for. Hope you have a good one man.

The offseason is the best time to be a homer, before the losses start piling up and spoil the mood.

I don't like the "get back to a bowl game". I take that as "let's shoot for 6-6". We need to shoot for as many wins as possible. 6-6 is never ok even when we are down, but I would be happy with a bowl.

You may not like it, "but a lot of people don't like reality". You gotta learn to crawl, before you walk and walk before you run. That's where we are.

You're right, I did fire the first shot and I respect your 2 cents. The excessive homerism wouldn't bother me in the least if it was coupled with a complete meltdown from many of the same posters that we see after the first loss or two, no matter who the opponent. Trust me, by mid October I will sound like the king of sunshine compared to some of the yayhoos on here. But all in all, you make good points.

Theres a difference in pumping sunshine and being subjective. You can see things both ways you dont have to act like a coach doesnt deserve criticism or that we are going to go undefeated. At the same time you dont have to go to the other extreme.

Fun guessing game. Name the nine vols that can squat more than 600 lbs. Here's my guesses:

Marcus Jackson
Mac Crowder
Kyler Kerbyson
Owen Williams
Danny O'Brien
AJ Johnson
Curt Maggit
Jordan Williams
One more I can't think of off top of my head

Wasn't.... jk fade. I get what you're saying. I love the hope and optimism, but some need to keep a little reality in there back pocket.

Most know the reality. A very small minority post ridiculous stuff (one extreme or the other) and people believe that's how they really feel. And everybody has to be set on one side of the fence or the other.

Most fans have enough common sense to know we're starting the season in the hole as far as talent+experience goes. I don't honestly care what the record is as long as the players continue to make progress in the system, nobody gets a serious injury, and we get to a bowl game and have the extra practice.

We start the season with a perfect record not in the hole. :) but I agree with all the rest. Sometimes misinterpreted feelings, comments being over analyzed, and just dumb comments overtake good threads and quality posts, but that's also some of the reasons that make this place unique.

Fade, I may have missed it but what's your take on the Florida game this year? At home in Neyland with Mischamp on the other sideline?
