Official Thread of the St. Louis Cardinals

All that's true, right now. It wasn't long ago that we did anything and everything through free agents and trades. It used to be a win now process and we had one of the worst farm systems in the last 10 years.

I remember. The farm system has improved significantly under Mozeliak.

Wait, what?

St Louis is not a small market

It's probably closer to the middle but STL isn't exactly a thriving metropolis. If the organization didn't have such a commitment to winning and a rabid fanbase they would be near the bottom.

Never said it was. Simply said it's not a small market in baseball

STL isn't a small market but it doesn't freespend like New York, Boston, and Chicago. Granted, most franchises can't freespend anyway.STL puts more emphasis on development through its farm system than any other franchise, and it shows why the club has been successful. They don't have the luxury of throwing money around like the Yankees, unfortunately.

I'll take Mozeliak over any GM in baseball.

Come on now. Tampa Bay is at least as good if not better.

Joke? It's absolutely at least as good. No doubt about it.

Not a joke. And not a definitive statement one way or the other. The idk man was serious. I think Tampa bays player development gets a bit overrated. They're good with trades and such. Incredibly well run.

I mean, they have churned out wonderful pitching prospects for the last 5 years or so...

How is that overrated?

That's a team that draws in the bottom 5 in attendance every year but continues to be more than competitive in the ridiculous AL East...

Longoria and Price aren't exactly reaches that ONLY the rays could have seen. He was the #1 overall pick. Great major league players, though. Nationals are a great organization for having Stephen Strasburg.

They traded for Chris Archer, iirc. Idk if I would consider Jake McGee the cats pajamas but he's a good reliever.

Cobb and Hellickson are solid for sure.

No.1 overall picks are never guaranteed.

Funny you don't mention James Shields. What round was he drafted in?

Tampa's farm system is top notch. They don't have as much history or fan support ,so they have to be very methodical with what they do. I have a lot of respect for that organization. Going from the worst franchise in baseball 10 years ago to a much respected organization now is no easy task. Oakland and Tampa Bay are the feel good stories of baseball. I'm also glad to see Baltimore and Pittsburgh good again.

The thing about the Cardinals is that they are already very good, and when you look at the prospects coming up, Wacha, Martinez, Wong, and Taveras just to name a few, that's just more talent to stockpile. I give a lot of credit to the Cards FO and scouting department for putting the franchise in this position. I feel great about the future.

I also forgot to say that the Astros, as laughable as they are right now, could be very good in a few years, if they keep the core in their farm system and develop it well.

As you should. In no way was I knocking your organization or farm system.

They got an outfielder. George Springer. I don't know much about him, but dude hits a ton. Saw him when the OKC Redhawks were playing a series in Memphis against the Redbirds.

He hit the hardest homerun I've ever seen in person. A straight line to left that was just starting to level off when it hit the bluff. Never seen a ball clear the field that fast.

I remember that home run. Twas impressive

It's going to be a ton of fun down the stretch. STL, Pittsburgh, and Cincy all within 2.5 games of each other. Cincy is 7 games clear of Arizona so no one is in danger of missing the playoffs right now.

Agree it is going to be fun down the stretch, this is a huge couple of weeks for you guys with 2 series against the pirates and 2 against the reds. I personally am looking forward to the fact that 6 out of the last 9 games for the pirates are against the reds (would not be surprised to see benches clear at some point). Nobody is in danger of missing the playoffs right now, but I'm not sure I feel too comfortable about being in the playoffs. Even the Cubs and Brewers have been playing well enough recently that the central is really going to knock each other around, and the diamondbacks are a good team with there only real tough competition being the Dodgers which have been so hot lately that they are bound to go on a stretch where the struggle here soon
