Official Thread of the St. Louis Cardinals

Barry Zito (6-8, 4.65) vs. Todd Wellemeyer (2-1, 4.74) today in the series finale.

Let's see if the Cardinals can give them the necessary runs to complete the sweep.

No unearned runs yet! Knock on wood.

4-0 Cards, top 4.

RBI hits so far for Ryan, Ludwick, and Pujols. Rolen with an RBI sac fly.

Duncan added 3 RBI of his own to make the final score 7-0.

Wellemeyer, Cate, Percival, Franklin, and Isringhausen all combined for the shutout.

40-45

Wells will return to the rotation after the break in place of Wellemeyer.

Wells' 3-11 record and 5.92 ERA remain unsightly, but the right-hander lowered his ERA more than a point and picked up a victory after being sent to the bullpen in mid-June. In four appearances and a spot start he allowed only two runs in 16 innings.

The reinstatement of Wells, a $4 million free agent pickup in the offseason, means Todd Wellemeyer (3-1, 4.19) returns to the bullpen. Wellemeyer threw five scoreless innings in a 7-0 victory over Barry Zito and the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, and the Cardinals are 7-1 in his eight starts.

The reds are coming on strong. 5-1 since Narron was fired. They might pass the stros or the pirates.

As TennesseeFan07 mentioned in the All Star Game Thread, more drama for the Cardinals...

Pujols was angry about being left on the All-Star bench and the St. Louis slugger took aim at the National League manager -- who just happened to be La Russa of his own Cardinals.

"It's the All-Star game. He can do what he wants," Pujols said Tuesday night. "He does whatever he wants. If I wasn't expecting to play, I wouldn't have come up here."
"If he wants to get upset, he can get upset," La Russa said. "Whatever he wants to do, he can do. It's America. That wasn't the most important thing tonight."

"Once we lost (Miguel) Cabrera and (Freddy) Sanchez, he was the guy we were going to use to protect ourselves in case we kept playing because of Albert's versatility," La Russa said. "I think we had the right guy at bat."

Pujols and La Russa are fine. No worries!

"Of course I was disappointed I didn't get in the game, but it's not a big deal," Pujols told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "People are making a big deal about it, saying I don't respect Tony or that he disrespected me. Are you kidding?

"My disappointment was more about wanting to do something to win the game. It's an honor to be at the game. Obviously, the fans wanted to see me play. But that wasn't the case this year. That's just the way it is."

Double, error, single, double, 2 runs, 0 outs so far for the Phillies. This one is over.

Wells made the error. That has to be the 3rd time this year he's thrown the ball away simply trying to throwing it to first base.

The first out is made when La Russa's favorite player got thrown out at second trying to stretch a single into a double.

4-0

RBI single by the pitcher.

C. Ruiz must be the worst hitter alive. Wells struck him out.

5-0, 2 outs, top of the order back up.
