yeah and remember he just turned 17, he is embarresing people like that in their 20's. he will go to england in no time like the rest of the great American players do. I just don't understand why he isn't on the Ghana team. I mean he was born there. Is it because he is an american citiczen now or something?

Another thing I have never understood is why the clock counts up. Having to do quick mental math to understand how much time is left makes the sport harder to watch. I think it would be better to count down and simply stop the clock when someone is injured. I think the concept of "extra time" is very silly. Why is the amount of time left in the game such a big secret?
I saw on TV so it must be true!!A ref said that no way can they keep it acurate so it is a best guess .thats why most games end after an attack then the kick out..That's my :twocents:

its true. in 12 years we will dominate the world cup.
I missed out on the plans to colonize Brazil. As long as Brazillians exist, they are going to dominate soccer.

I think it's stupid that an ejected player can't be replaced. Why let a referee with bad judgment ruin a game? Also, when a ref makes a good decision to eject somebody, why let the actions of one man ruin it for his team? I suppose if the NBA had those rules, Stackhouse would have been red-carded for his flagrant foul the other night, and the Mavs would have played 4 on 5 the rest of the game. I really enjoy watching the U.S. in the World Cup, but that is pretty much the only soccer I watch, and every time I watch a World Cup game I get several reminders of why I generally don't watch soccer.
I think the foul system they have is just fine. The problem occurs when you have zealous refs all to ready to throw out penalties and eject players. Under normal circumstances, getting a yellowcard would be a pretty hard foul, something that would get say, a basketball player, T'd up if not ejected. Then a red card, like basketball, would result in straight ejection. Helps keep teams from playing too dirty. Especially because there's really no other way to severley penalize a team. "Play too dirty and you'll be playing a man down." Works fine by me.

One thing I'd love to see American sports get is this referee review system. I think it would be fantastic. It would keep refs from calling zealous or biased games. If you call it poorly enough, you're putting your job on the line. Fantastic stuff.

The official has a watch on and keeps the exact time. It is always kept on the field and there is no guessing about how much time is left. The only "best guess" is when injury time is added on at the end of a half (usually 2-5 minutes). They won't end a half while a team is attcking, the ball must be in a neutral point. The same with injuries- play will not be stopped until the ball goes out of bounds or is stalled while in play (like the keeper has it). It also speaks of sportsmanship in the game. If an opposing player is injured, the team kicks the ball out of bounds to stop play for him. They are then given the ball back because of this. It's kind of an unwritten rule and it works well.

The card system works well in soccer. They are supposed to be given out on flagrant/intentional fouls. Some fouls are automatic red cards like intent to injure, a takedown from behind on a breakaway or an intentional handball to stop a goal. Yesterday was not a good example of how it should work.

Imagine how sports in the US might play differently if the "red card" system was in place. If a football player was thrown out after 2 personal fouls and the team had to play w/ 10 men for the rest of the game, do you think that might make him think twice before doing it?

Adu will be a great player for the US in the future. We need more like him. Also 2345, if he played for Ghana this year he couldn't come back and play for the US. One of my favs is Gooch and the guy is HUGE! He'll be a great player for us too.

The MLS is trying to get more competitive by inviting the top teams from Europe to come play matches. For instance, the MLS all-star team will play against Chelsea (a top club in the English league) next season instead of against each other.

I'll take Renaldino any day over Adu. Maybe not in 4-8 yeas, but right now I'd definitely take Renaldino. He's amazing.

Just as a side note from a guy (me) who has played soccer his entire life: Nobody dominates international soccer, and nobody will. In 12 years, the US SHOULD be competing for the semifinals/finals in the WC.

Any predictions on wether the US advances or not? I think they're pretty much in the drivers seat, but they've got to really put on a show vs Ghana.

PS utftid, How were the crackers?

US isn't really in the driver's seat. When a team has to win and needs help, they aren't really controlling the situation. We should beat a good Ghana team, and Italy needs to beat the Czechs. If that happens, we advance.

There are other situations that could pan out where goal differential comes into play. We'd want the US to win by 4 or more goals, which they've never done in the WC.

So go US and go Italia!

But considering what a tough draw we had I think we're lucky to be in it at all at this point, and we've got our easiest match coming up; whereas, the two heavyweights of group d get to pound on each other in a vital game for advancing in the tournament.

I'm not sure what the goal differential is, but if Italy loses and we win I think it'll be a little bit narrower than four.

Of course, the worse scenario for us is a tie between Italy and the Czechs. . .

On a different subject, the two best looking teams that I've seen are Portugal and Argentina. To me (and I'm no expert), they had the most in-sync attacks and the most creativity. The Germans looked strong yesterday too. The English are the most baffling to me at this point.

For that goal differential to be within reach from the Italians if they lose, the Czechs will have to give them the beating of a lifetime.

Not necesarily. We still have a chance of moving on no matter what Italy does. But for our best shot, Italy needs to beat the Czech Republic or Czech Republic needs to beat Italy by a wide margin.

We have to win, and so does Italy...
Yup, this is the only way to expect to move on. I mean, we could annihilate Ghana and the other game be a draw... but the likelyhood of that is next to nil.
