Ohio State in More Trouble (merged)

All I can say is Karma strikes again. Ohio State turned in Pearl after he derailed there overrated hoops team in the sweet 16 and now less than a year later there involved in their own scandal. Hope Thad Matta crossed his T and dotted his i because when the NCAA is in house they look at everything. Just ask CBP what happened when Kiffin brought them to campus.
Pearl bought them to campus.

People here in Columbus are so indignant. They think it's an outrage that Tressel is getting in trouble for this. And think the self-imposed penalties are more than enough punishment.

I don't see any way that Tressel escapes being slapped with failure to monitor and failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance. And for lying to both the school's compliance officers and the NCAA, me might get charged with unethical conduct. Those are major violations whose punishments will be more serious than a 2 game suspension and measly fine. It's unfortunate that Pearl's penalties will likely be punished before Tressel, because I have a feeling that Pearl will get worse based on the two programs' national standing.

I'd also like to say that Gordon Gee is a spineless dweeb. It figures someone like that would come from Vandy.

Do any of us think that the NCAA will severely punish their fair haired boys at Ohio State? They will give them token punishment just to squelch criticism. They let their players play in the bowl game after getting caught. Auburn got off Scott Free because of the money and ratings in the NC game in the Cam Newton scandal. The NCAA is very selective in who they punish and the extent of penalties. They will be easy on OSU.

The funny thing is OSU fans have been so fickle for the last 5 years of Tressel's career.

A lot of them seem to be under the impression that the issue is over now.

it's ridiculous but given their history it's more than I expected. I guess OSU is just too big to fail
I think they handled this whole thing poorly. They would have almost been better off pulling an Auburn and playing stupid. They essentially didn't even punish Tressel.

I don't know why people keep saying Pearl benefits from this. Pearl is screwed, regardless. This just takes some of the attention off Tennessee desperately trying to hold on the Pearl.

If SV had been fired yesterday, I think that would have ended any hopes Bruce has of returning. As it stands, the NCAA may hammer both so hard that it is impossible to keep them, but the perception is that both UT and the SEC took the violations much more seriously than tOSU. Remember UT levied a 7 figure fine, cancelled his contract and suspended him recruiting for a year. The SEC stepped in and suspended him for 1/2 the SEC season.

Incidentally, the fine levied by tOSU was the same amount he earned for making it to a BCS game. :good!: I fully expect the NCAA to step in and suspend SV for more games (presumably as the authority figure he deserves at least as much as the 5 game suspension received by the players).

I can't wait to see how the NCAA ang Big 10 handles this with OSU being Nebraska's first home game as a Big 10 member on OCt 8.

He lied like Pearl and had committed infractions at a previous school like Pearl, but Tressel didn't orchestrate a big plan between players, coaches and families to get out of it.

Pearl didn't just orchestrate a plan, he orchestrated a big plan. Nice.

This Tressel situation is worse, fella. Player eligibility is not a small deal.

Ohio State fans think that he did all of this because the FBI told him to. He didn't want to interfere in a federal investigation, and given the choice between that and breaking NCAA rules, he did the latter. Which is an honorable thing and he should be commended for it! Even rewarded!

The NCAA never declared the players ineligible. They did not vacate any games the players participated in.

The NCAA considered it a violation, but apparently not a violation that affected their eligibility.

pearl comitted the actual violation. tressell just failed to report it. i think the ncaa will see a difference.

Tressel did a lot more than "fail to report" a violation. He signed off on the compliance report submitted to the NCAA stating that he did not know about the violation prior to 12/7/10. That is lying to the NCAA.

I'm not going to get dragged into a debate about who's violations were worse, but they are certainly comparable. What I don't think is up for debate is that tOSU did not take the violation very seriously. Fining Tressel his bonus from the BCS appearance and suspended him for Akron and Toledo was not a strong statement.

both are going to fry IMO

Tressel knowingly played ineligible players. That is committing a violation much more serious than what Pearl did.

If I were a coach, I would self-report everything. You will eventually be found out anyway. The NCAA is more lenient when you self report.

Pearl bought them to campus.

No Kiffin brought them here with his secondary violations and hostessgate and they looked around to find the phone calls and other stuff why they were here. I agree Pearl brought them back with the BBQ scandal but Kiffin got them interested

ESPN is a joke, they don't lead with the story, never mention the emails, have a reporter on from the Columbus dispatch that SERIOUSLY says how severe the penalties are 2 games and 1/12th of salary are. PATHETIC. Heard a couple of comments from Dan Patrick show and he was going easy on Tressel, not surprising though as that is DP's team. Collin Cowherd was the only one on ESPN that called it for what it is. After the way ESPN continues to go after Pearl, I hope Tennesse goes on a run in the SEC and makes it deep into the NCAA tourney, I bet all the sudden they stop mentioning the problems with Pearl and UT. To me if it means Pearl has to sit for a year, it would be worth it to have that POS at OSU have to sit for a year.

Just another example of why you shouldnt put anything in emails that you dont want posted on the cover of the NY Times. JT should have never replied to that email, He should have deleted it and played dumb (my Assistant deleted it) and picked up the phone and called the dude. He could have basically avoided this if he hadnt sent the reply back

He could have, and I'm just spitballing here, avoided the whole thing by addressing the situation.
