Ohio State in More Trouble (merged)

I think it's fair to say that UT self-imposed much more severe sanctions than OSU did. A 12-month off-campus recruiting suspension is a much bigger punishment than being suspended from two of the weakest games on the schedule.

UTs violation involved recruiting, tOSU's doesn't.

It was just shared that OSU is suspending him 2 games and finng him $250,000. Obviously they talked to Hamilton. The NCAA has yet to touch it.

I would be shocked if blohio state got more than a slap on the wrist.they bring in alot of money, besides what other team can come get beat by one of our s e c teams in the nc this year.

USC shakes its head in disbelief.

Bruce Pearl and the top assistant were suspended from off-campus recruiting for one year. The #2 assistant was suspended for 6 months, and the third assistant was suspended for 3 months.

I believe there was a reduction in official visits, but I'm not positive on that. And, they did not allow official visits during Florida football weekend. I think there were other smaller punishments, like a brief reduction in phone calls. The biggest self-imposed punishment was the off-campus recruiting ban.

Still more severe than Tressel's joke of a suspension, I think.

One was lying about a minor recruiting violation.

If it's true that Tressel knew and lied about knowing (which I'm not sure he did), that means he knowingly used players that probably should have been ineligible. I'd say that's probably worse.

if he knew and did nothing, that's as bad as Pearl lying, and the fact that even after he knew, he played them in the bowl game, still burns me up

I'm going on record to say Osu gets hit hard because the coach played what he knew would be inelidgible players. 1.Tressel withheld info when he first found out 2. He lied about knowing 3. He got the ncaa to let them play in the Sugar Bowl based on his lies 4. Most important he made a mockery of the NCAA.

Pearl lied and turned himself in. Granted he did that because he knew he would eventually get busted. But Tressel tryed to cover the whole thing up.

one-year off-campus recruiting suspension > 2-game suspension

As I have stated in every OSU thread, UT suspended Pearl from recruiting off campus for one year. If anything, OSU giving Tressel a 2-game suspension makes UT look that much more proactive.

The NCAA is gonna hammer them for this before it's over. So don't worry. This is just the beginning. They probaly won't annoucne it until August just to be the jerks that they are.

That's a good point. I hadn't thought of that. I wonder what the suspension would have been like had they known Tressel was complicit.

And, as you basically said, Pearl probably would have covered up the BBQ if he could.

I'm more concerned with UT's result than OSU. UT/Pearl should be punished, but I'd prefer that the punishment not be over the top, which is what I'm afraid of.

OSU's involves ineligible players. I would think that's considerably worse.

they both knowingly broke the rules, and lied about it.

I think Pearl deserved the off campus recruiting restriction because his violation actually involved recruiting. I guess they could have given that to Tressel, but suspending him from 2 games probably evens it up...The major difference is in the wallet, Tressel is getting off a lot easier than CBP did in that area.

Tressel's suspension is a joke!! He has to miss the Akron & Toledo games. All suspensions should start being conference games and not the BS filler games like these. Might help with some of the players too if they new they would miss a conference game.

No worse that letting the Ohio St players involved play in the Bowl game and the make them sit out next year. Now if any goes pro then what?

No, it's not. I'd be stunned if that is what makes the difference to the NCAA.

I agree that Tressel's violations didn't involve recruiting, but 2 games is nothing.
