Oil Rig Explosion

A couple hours ago I glanced at an ROV feed and saw a rotary saw. Didn't have time at the moment to watch what was going on.

They aren't showing it anymore. Someone on another board said it "dropped" the saw.

They said that they were putting all the necessary equipment in place to begin the LMRP cap installation, which would include the ROV saw to cut off the damaged riser, so I assume that is what it is for. By 'dropped the saw' do they mean lost the saw blade or started using it? It wouldn't seem like the LMRP cap plan would already be starting....

The saw you saw (geeze - that really looks stupid in writing) is called a super grinder. Basically, it's a thruster motor outfitted with metal cutting blades like you'd use in a machine shop. It turns at an extreme RPM and it's very difficult for the ROV manipulators to hang on to. Typically, the ROV crews will bolt them in so they can't drop them. Apparently that ROV crew didn't get the memo...

They are cutting the choke and kill lines that aren't being used for the top kill effort. They have to be removed before we can move on to the next phase if we do.

Most everything is in place now. But, the riser won't be cut with the super grinder that was in the video. Instead, it will be cut by two different devices. The first cut will be by a huge (and I mean HUGE) underwater shear. That will drop the majority of the riser from the LMRP. Then, there will be a clean cut made at the top of the LMRP with a diamond wire saw.

You are correct - the LMRP top hat plan isn't starting. In fact, nothing is starting right now. We were supposed to restart the top kill hours ago... But, we have to wait for the feds to say we can start... what a waste of time.

Thanks for the details. :hi:

BP needs to hold a press conference to explain that there are delays being caused by the Federal government's incessant need for everything to be channeled through layers of useless bureaucracy.

Environmental impact statements from the EPA, permissions from the USACoE, and so on. It's just stupid and the idiots cheering against BP and for the government here are just that, idiots.

Looks like they're breaking the news that Top Kill isn't working ... the press conference is on CNN at the moment. The COO is saying it could take 4 days, maybe longer for the LMRP top hat plan to finish. Hopefully this one works.

One of the "funny" things about this (although I'm not laughing) was that BP CEO who came out and publicly said this had a "60-70%" chance of success.

Why would you make a prediction like that regarding something that has never been done before, even if you really thought it was true? Doesn't BP already have enough egg on its face?

It's a good question. Putting odds on it is a risk.

T. Boone Pickens was on Larry King Live on Thursday night, I think, and he basically called it a longshot. That was before I read orangetoes comments that things weren't looking so good. Pickens probably just got lucky with that assertion, though...or unlucky, depending on your perspective.

The COO just said that the pressure readings make them feel fairly confident that cutting off the riser won't result in all that much more oil release. I was worried that a lot of the pressure drop was coming from the damaged riser, but it doesn't sound like it. At least that means there (hopefully) won't be a lot more oil pouring out as they try the LMRP top hat procedure.

Setting the expectations low... It shouldn't take us anywhere near that long to make the cuts and put the top hat on.

Because all CEO's are politicians... and all politicians have something to sell...

there's some reports that the buses used were from the Jefferson Parish public school system, if that's true, it's more than just BP that's involved in this charade.

Not much of a surprise here - La does not have a public transportation system and the schools are out for the summer. I don't know if you can make the leap that Jeff Parish officials are colluding with BP and the Obama administration because of the buses.

What it does--when they talk about each of these "fixes" as if they will work, then they don't--is leave the skeptical
with the impression that BP is just trying to buy time by looking busy when in reality it won't be fixed until the relief well finishes.

I see your point.

But what does the public say when you come out with, "we have a 15% chance of this working"? At this stage of the game, anything they say will come back on em if it don't work. And just think, if they do find a fix, the line will be, "why didn't you try that to begin with."

To me they are throwing darts blind folded, hoping for some luck.

Your boat's carrying out the LMRP top hat?

Good luck!

The LMRP top hat is already pre-staged west of the BOP. My boat has the shears and the diamond wire cutters for cutting the riser.

Thanks - is should be a straightforward operation - but, I'll take any luck I can get.

Ah, so you will be opening the sucker up. Happy cutting and good luck (again :) ).

This story is starting to feel like press conferences (not that there were them at the time) from British Generals at the Somme.
