Oil Rig Explosion

Sorry, I have been very unplugged the last couple days...

I couldn't resist....no worries :)

Orangetoes said that things weren't looking good yesterday, and then BP finally gave up on it today. They are now off to the next option (a smaller top hat over the LMRP), which orangetoes filled us in on earlier in the thread.

BP CEO on FoxNews: "We want this to end as soon as possible. This has been a huge dirsuption to the people of LA ... I want my life back. I want this to be over .... "

anybody else think this sound politically tone deaf?? I couldn't believe he said that ..

One of these guys could plug it:

That doesn't bother me as much as the statements which weren't grounded in reality. At least he is being honest here.

I looked at the ROV cams a few times throughout the day and couldn't figure out what's going on. Several times the camera was pointed into the black abyss.

Not good. Cutting the riser could increase the oil flow as much as 20%, per government estimate. It says "temporary" until "the containment device is applied over the leak."

That assumes it works. What if it doesn't?

That was pretty expected. There is some level of pressure drop across the damaged riser, so cutting it off is going to increase flow. The good news is that there wasn't *that* much pressure drop across it (per recent measurements), so the increase in flow isn't all that much (20% ... vs. doubling, for example).

I'm going to bet that the LMRP top hat can work well enough to remove at least that extra 20%, and probably more, oil on average. So, hopefully we won't end up in worse shape.

What I hope we end up with is a LMRP top hat that removes a good fraction of the oil while it is working. I worry that the occasional bad burp by the well might throw the cap off its performance (let's say clogging if thy get a high gas/water burp) and clog it, but hopefully it can be withdrawn and cleaned out/replaced. Orangetoes, is that possible if it does clog? It's small enough that it would seem that is possible.

Yes, it will be a fairly tight fit over the LMRP. It also has a bunch of ROV stabs for methanol injection. Plus, and probably most important, the Discoverer Enterprise will be connect to it with it's drill string and will most likely have a little weight on it to hold it in place.

My biggest concern is the lack of subsea safety controls on the Enterprise. There is no BOP or choke between the source and the drill ship. They may have a surface BOP inline - but, I don't know about it.

FYI, we are on bottom now prepositioning the diamond wire saw. We'll cut the riser externals with the super grinder this evening and bring the shears down tomorrow. I expect sometime in the late morning/early afternoon you'll hear about this phase moving forward.

Not sure if regulations are too lax. My initial impression is that existing reg.s weren't enforced properly. It's similar to the financial situation. Rather than come up with all sorts of new regulations - just implement the existing ones correctly and we'll probably do fine.

The government loves to make rules - it's weak on implementation. To compensate, it makes new rules...

see Immigration enforcement for another example

I'd call this underperforming the "plan"

"BP Prepared for Spill 10 Times Gulf Disaster, Permit Plans Say"

BP Plc said in permit applications for drilling in the Gulf of Mexico that it was prepared to handle an oil spill more than ten times larger than the one now spewing crude into the waters off the southern United States.

“Proper execution of the procedures detailed in this manual will help to limit environmental and ecological damage to sensitive areas as well as minimizing loss or damage to BP facilities in the event of a petroleum release,” the company said in its oil-spill response plan, filed with the U.S. Minerals Management Service in 2008.

What does "limit environmental and ecological" damage mean, I wonder? The impact to the coastlines has been limited to some degree by booms/burns/skimming/etc. I suppose its relative, but its hard to imagine how well a spill 10 times larger than this would have been handled considering the weather has cooperated for the most part on this on and it is still getting to some places they don't want it.

I think we should plug the hole with all the oil execs that keep making excuses.

For those that may be still be awake... we just tested the shears at depth about 75 feet from the riser. Next, we'll be putting the diamond wire saw at the riser under the kink. Immediately after, we'll be putting the shears on the riser and making our first cut.

We'll probably make the shear cut around 0130 (CST). The diamond wire cut (which will cut the last bit of riser away) will happen about 15 minutes later.

Maybe I'm imagining but it seems like the quality of the ROV video has improved in the last few days.

Ok... false start - 5 yards..... We've had some ROV piloting difficulties tonight. But, it wouldn't have mattered anyway. I've just been informed that we won't be cutting anything until 0700 (CST) at the earliest. Apparently, we are waiting for federal approval to proceed.

Oh well... what's a few more barrels at this point anyway?

As to the ROV video - it looks better because this boat has a metric butt-ton of bandwith compared to the other boats. I'd tell you how much it costs per day but no one would actually believe me.

I've now been offshore since the 23rd of April on this trip. I'm averaging 16-18 hour days. But, I don't really sleep much when I am off. My state room is also my office - so, I never really get off of work. I, like BP's CEO, am ready to get home to my family. So, could someone please call the President and tell him to get out of the way and let us get to work?

But he assured us he was available on this 24/7!

I am not a republican, but I am enjoying the irony of Obama starting to get needled over this disaster.
