Ok, we need to have a serious discussion [defense concerns, banks, martinez] (merged)

This is a very thin roster in the linebacker and defensive backs rooms.

It will take a couple of recruiting classes and possible portal additions to add some depth to those areas.

Tim Banks will likely be here next season and I think Heupel looks for another defensive backs coach during the off season.
If Heupel is serious about winning, Bank's is gone.

I've gone back and forth. I am officially off the fence. Banks is not the guy UT needs for DC.

You can cover bad coaching with talent... but you can't win championships of any kind doing that.
Off the fence as well. How do you preach accountability to your players and ignore complete ineptitude on the part of the DC. Lots of less talented teams than us have played better defense against SC. I will be very disappointed if Heupel and White don’t come up with a better solution at DC during the off season.

About Defensive Coordinator. SC just score TDs on 5 consecutive possessions. Multiple 70+ yard drives. 3rd and 4th down conversions. Big chunk plays. No stops. Zero. Zilch. Heupel had major problems with his DC at UCF and was criticized by fans saying he was completely disconnected from the defense. He was spared having to fire Randy Shannon because he got the Tennessee job.

Is this a Jimmy and Joe problem, or is this a failure to scheme and coach the talent that’s here? UT will be ranked in the bottom 5 of 130 teams in pass defense after this game. What is the long term solution?

They have to go!!!!!

I don't think Heupel moves on from him. But I 100 percent think our success is limited by the d coordinator hire. If he decided to move on and fix the problem this season it would be best for the long term, but unfortunately continuity and getting players will be what keeps the current regime in place. We won't break through unless a change is made.

Defensive recruiting is actually going good this cycle. It was weak last class and nonexistent in 2021. You ain’t gonna build much of a defense with the portal. Just need about three more solid classes to stack on 2023 and defense will be fine by 2027.

Looked like AL Wilson was calling for maybe Derek Mason.

Sheesh……OK-ST is giving up 30 points per game this year and over 32 per game to FBS teams.

We need someone who can get more out of what they have.

Tennessee needs a DC that can develop, scheme pressure, and definitely not give in to “your going to give up yards”

We know teams will gain yards. We don’t have to “let” them……over and over and over. Something has to give.

I’m definitely done with Banks. Hopefully Heupel is too. If not the O will have to take Tennessee as far as it can next year too on its on.

Nope. Schemes and coaching are not producing with the potential we have now. Slaughter and Flowers have not improved.
Turnage and Hadden look worse the last 4-5 games. How many years Mccullough been here? As bad as he was 3 years ago.
I see no improvement anywhere in the secondary.

We do seem to be recruiting better DB's, but we haven't shown that we can get them coached up. 3 year starters should be equiv to a 4* recruit and our starters get worse?
Something ain't right.

Funny how nobody mentioned depth when we beat LSU and Bama. Nobody mentioned depth when we boat raced UK and Missouri. Why not?
When the offense is scoring 48 plus it changes the other team to one dimensional.
The dc coordinator opening job posting should read:
Able to keep opposing teams under 35
Able to keep opponents under 400 yds offense
Able to keep opponents off field on 3rd down 5 times in a game.
We can’t do any of this right now and haven’t for 2 years!

Have they won 5 SEC games?
My point being, these lower division teams held SC to fewer points and I am willing to bet we have more talent than they do. The excuses for this defensive staff are starting to wear thin.

We are nearing the end of year 2 - the offense has improved dramatically, DL has improved, secondary remains lost, and the overall defensive strategy is hard to understand.

I think our strategy is to keep everyone in front of them, try to tackle, and tighten up in the Red Zone. Make teams settle for field goals. I think they play this way because of talent issues. It didn't work last night.

At this point, #1 and #2 should at least be in position to make a few plays.
#5 was a complete embarrassment last night, and I’m not necessarily just talking about his play.

The interior defensive line has improved. The DE play has not. Byron Young did nothing last night in the rush game. Overall, I thought this in last game as well.

I have been complimentary of Jeremy Banks play over the last few weeks. Even when he has not made the play himself he was quarterback for the defense. He changed my mind in a good way from the beginning of the year. Beasley made a few plays at LB but outside of that LB play was disappointing.

All I know is our secondary is unatheletic, slow, and terrible at tackling. And I don’t think we can get elite recruits with our current DB coach.

I know he prefers the west coast but if Wilcox is fired this year wouldn’t mind if he returned . His defenses were solid
Ansley and Wilcox were pretty solid and M.Kiffin was here a year. Banks has the potential but at this time absolutely no athletic talent. Martinez doesn't teach leverage the way I feel it should be played. DB's simply can't position themselves to find the ball in flight which leads to a lot of penalties. We are 2 years away, (providing we recruit well), to having a decent defense. Firing the DC isn't a sound decision considering what he has to work with. Our AD will help Josh out and we'll clear this hurdle.

I agree. I'll also add our dbs are terrible against leveraging the run also. They willingingly move inside and allow people to block them down, giving up containment. It makes them look stupid because that's exactly what the offense wants them to do..They've been terrible at this for 2 seasons to go along with their obvious coverage inadequacies.

I was getting fed up with Haden flexing on SC after he gave up 25 yards a clip. Not quite sure what he thought he was doing but all the DB's need to pull their heads out of their rears and play. Georgia created the scab and SC ripped it off. On to the next game and kicking Candy's but.

Banks will probably be successful with better players. Martinez has got to go. The secondary is a joke, not even serviceable. Bad enough the players have no instincts, they can’t do the teachable things like cover and tackle.
