Oklahoma UPSET ALERT

Why do some people insist that "any given Saturday" or "puncher's chance" are valid arguments for actual predictions? Possibility? Ok...but any real probability? Not so much. It's closer to playing russian roullette with the odds reversed, all the chambers hot except one. Is it possible to get the "click" instead of the "bang"? Sure...you want to have that pointed at your head? Didn't think so.

We have some players that are Oklahoma (pretty much anybody really) level. We do not have a team with their level players yet, especially along the lines. Having said that we're young and promising in a lot of areas. We just brought in a fine class and as I type this we're #7 on Rivals with 10 4* or better recruits, 5 of which are lineman.

Patience is not a particularly common attribute among sports fans. There is no rational reason to EXPECT us to beat Okahoma, certainly not in their house, not with this team. It's nice to think it COULD happen, but it's nicer, IMHO, to think it might not be much longer before we can change that "could" win to "should" win.

Perfect analogy

FWIW,

This is what OU appears to have.

On offense:

QB - Knight is an average passer. Very consistent with short routes, screens, etc. but struggles with accuracy on the long ball. Looks to avoid the INT and overthrows often on long passes. Great pocket awareness, avoids sacks and a great runner. Better passer while rolling out. Sacks are very hard to come by due to his mobility/pocket awareness and a strong OL.

RB - Young and inexperienced but talented. Play 3 RB's. Best RB appears to Ford. A nice combination of power/ strength and speed with some elusiveness. Finds a way to get a few extra yac. Ross is 2nd back. Good size but not as hard to bring down due to poorer balance than Ford but has good vision and elite straight line speed. If he gets a gap, he can take it to the house. Fast safeties will have a problem running him down without an angle. The bruiser is Perine. A straight up power back. Very hard to tackle from the waist up.

WR - Lost a ton of productivity here. Shepard is an All-Big XII type WR. Torched Alabama often running and receiving. Also, return punts. OU gets very inexperienced after that with Neal emerging as a player against Tulsa. After that, productivity falls off sharply.

TE - Last season's QB is the starter. A better receiver than blocker. Blocking is a work in progress but I expect to see him subbed out for better blockers as needed.

OL - Strength of the team. Very experienced and I do not know of any weaknesses.

Defense
DL - Same as OL.

LB - Lost the best true LB due to a Title IX controversy for an alleged sexual assault that resulted in no formal charges due to lack of evidence. His replacement, Jordan Evans, has played well in limited play due to a suspension in game 1 for targeting. This will be his first test. Alexander is solid at the other LB spot. Striker, technically listed as a LB is unblockable as a pass rusher but can be a liability in the run game and in pass coverage. He plays all over the field. OU cannot afford an injury here.

CB - OU lost it's best CB, Sanchez, last week and struggled a bit in pass coverage after he left the game. This might be an upportunity for UT. Tulsa definitely had some success with the back-up's. Wilson has been solid at the other corner. He is a first year starter at CB after playing NB for the last few years. He will likely hold-up but the other corner is a huge question mark.

Safety - Play has been very good.

Special Teams - All units are outstanding. PK is an AA candidate. KR is RB A. Ross, good vision and speed. Took one to the house this weekend. Punter and all coverage teams solid.

OU off-boarded several coaches and upgraded in each instance prior to last season which really improved the play of both lines and ST.

I expect OU to win by 2 td's. I believe UT's best chance is a solid run game with timely play action to take advantage of our inexperienced corner. OU has gotten bigger in the front 7 this season but struggled at times last season with a physical run game.

On the other side, I expect OU to move the ball against anybody. I expect UT to test OU some but I would be surprised to see them keep OU under 30.

My best guess is OU by a 34-20 type score.

Quit overthinking the game and just let it happen. The best team will win. Know will that be Oklahoma or Tennessee. If football was played on paper then Vandy would be 1-1 so just let the game play out and cheer on your team.

Who knows? OK could get 5 or 6 people hurt and have 7-8 turnovers. Anything can happen.

Geez Louise, there sure are a lot of cranky-ass people on VN today. Hard to believe that we won yesterday. :zeitung_lesen:

We will need to create and capitalize on a few turnovers to compete for the victory in this one. That is our chance

Former Alabama QB & now SEC Network Analyst Greg McElroy "I'm putting Oklahoma on UPSET ALERT. Tennessee is a team that believes & is better on defense. I haven't seen enough from Trevor Knight to believe he is the real deal."

I have. Did anybody see his TD run against Cupcake State yesterday? Dude has some wheels to go along with his arm

It is possible. Who would have ever thought Appy ST would have beat Michigan a few years back.

Anyone hear what the line is on the game?

Realistically, if I wasn't a Vol fan there is absolutely no way I'd give us much of a shot at this game. Oklahoma is at home and a better team, so why would I think we can win. The best chance would be for Oklahoma to take us too lightly and we get several turnovers etc. along with timely offense on our part. I want to win every game just like everyone else, yet our team is so young it makes it so very unlikely.
Fans hearts are not supposed to be realistic though, so I'll give us a 33% chance. That's 30% higher than my head thinks.

I swear I have never seen so many "So-called" fans say they're UT fans and never give our football team a chance! Everyone on here should know that in college football anything can happen and you would think that no matter how small our chance was that our fans would put atleast a little bit of faith in our boys! Rant over..... GO VOLS!!!! :banghead2:

I would love to see UT pull off the big win in Norman, but recognize that we are "building a football team" and OU is a team that has been knocking at the championship door for a number of years now.
I remember the '86 sugar bowl when we destroyed an "unbeatable" Univ of Miami team.... One of the proudest moments as a Vol fan.
It would take that kind of an effort to win this game.
If we don't win I just hope to see the boys stay healthy, continue developing, keep fighting till the end, and prepare for the grueling SEC schedule ahead.
Go vols!

Hate to say it, but if our offensive line doesn't step it up majorly this weekend this game will not be competitive. We've got the playmakers on offense and speed on defense to compete with anyone this year, but our offensive line is a major black eye for our program right now. I would love to upset the Sooners in Norman as much as any Vol fan, but right now I just can't see it happening based on the first two weeks of play.

Dr. Lou and Finebaum will put a stop to that talk. If it doesn't involve Notre Dame or Alabama, it's not worth talking about.

The problem seems to be that a lot of ppl want to be either a sports analyst or a coach. Seems that as fans they get their feelings hurt or embarrassed when we lose. As I have heard many times "I'm not getting excited till we prove something. I can't take the let down again." It has been some ruff years.

And Welcome to VN!!!

A lot of things can happen in a game like this. UT is expected to lose and needs only to be competitive......hopefully not get blown out of Norman. OU, on the other hand, is expected to win and will need to run up the score in order to outshine Oregon and FSU for eliciting consideration as a potential # 1 pick of the week. The pressure's on OU and it's my guess Butch's going to toss in the kitchen sink. That's a luxury provided only to a team figured to lose anyways. Young as they are, team 118 has a lot of unknown, or at least unrevealed assets. I predict the first L of the season for our fellas in Orange, but I'm not betting on it as a certainty.

Best post in this thread. I agreed wholeheartedly. No way am I counting us out of any game. Like you said, anything can happen. That's why we play the game. :good!:
