I would have rather introduced myself on a new thread but forum rules prohibit it until you have accumulated 100 posts.
I am a life long Sooner going back to the Wilkinson era and for the past few years I have enjoyed college football discussion on Warchant, Tidefans, and other forums associated with teams we play in non-conference games. I still frequent TideFans on occasion. A group of friends & I always make it a point to travel to significant road games with opponents we rarely if ever play so in the past few years I have been to Tuscaloosa, Tallahassee, & Morgantown.
My contributions to the dialogue leading up to these games is simply as a fan of college football and someone who has enough knowledge of the Sooner program to at least be credible.
Now that our spring camp is complete, I can give you an unbiased opinion of this year's edition of OKLAHOMA FOOTBALL & what you can expect in Norman, both on and off the field. While I now live in Galveston, Tx. I have been a season ticket holder @ OU and still get back to select home games & in fact, I will be there when the Vols come to town. I actually have a great-nephew on the team now. My group is already planning it's trip to Knoxville in 2015. So, consider this an introduction and an invitation to begin dissecting the upcoming game. I will answer your questions about the 2014 Sooners as best I can with candor & honesty. See you in Sept. and keep those cards and letters coming.

It should actually be about 1000!

But welcome to VOL Nation!!

The much respected Phil Steele just commented that he expects Oklahoma to be in the final 4 of this years innaugural playoff system, yet we have some wizards on here that think we will go to their house and pull out a victory. My goodness.
Damn right, we gone whip they ass.

Lmao! We have people worried to death about Utah State, but think we're going to go into Norman and beat the Sooners?

The strength of the 2014 edition of OKLAHOMA FOOTBALL will be in the trenches on both sides of the ball. We return 7 O-linemen who have started at least one game in their career and our front 7 on D may be overall the best we have had in the Stoops era. We are deep enough in our down 3 (3-4 D) to rotate two complete sets w/o noticeable drop off. The only relatively inexperienced O-lineman will be our Center. On both sides of the ball we will return quality players who were injured @ some point in the 2013 season and therefore didn't see the field in the Sugar Bowl.

The question marks on O in no particular order of significance are:

QB, Trevor Knight is extremely talented but he has shown inconsistency in his first year and he seems to be somewhat prone to injury. Running a Pistol scheme that requires a true running threat really puts pressure on his vulnerability.

WR's. We get our best back (Sterling Shepherd) but must replace both Bester & Saunders. Lot's of young talent with playing experience but still untested in terms of game by game consistency.

TE...we haven't had a quality TE since Gresham left for the Bengals but there seems to be some encouraging news out of spring camp that we may see dramatic improvement with both McNamara and Blake Bell looking good.

RB's...we lost the top three but some outstanding talent waiting in the wings including Ford, Ross, & true freshman Joe Mixon .

On D the only question marks are at one safety & one corner back spot. We are lacking depth @ LB but the starters are solid. Lot's of team speed on D (I thought we were faster overall than Alabama in the Sugar Bowl) but our tackling needs to improve. We are in our second full year in a 3-4 and the improvement from the start of the 2013 season has been dramatic.

The kicking game is good with our place kicker likely to be a Groza finalist. The return game should be solid. Punting could be more consistent.

The biggest complaint about Coach Stoops from OU fans is probably his seeming inability to get the team up for teams we should beat. We have had a disturbing pattern of playing down to inferior opponents. Since he's been @ OU I can remember only one game where I thought we were simply outclassed on the field and that was the NC game vs Southern Cal. 2013 may have been his best coaching job as we overcame numerous season ending injuries to quality players including two co-captains. Most feel we should have at least one more NC notched in his time @ OU but few would trade him and he is now the winningest HC in OU history and given the fact that we are the only program with 4 HC's with over 100 wins each in their careers @ OU the fact that he leads in wins is quite an accomplishment.

Welcome to the forum Dreams. Let's cut to the chase. Most of us believe we go to Norman and get boat raced by the Sooners, say by about 21-28 points. Can you provide any reason(s) why this prediction is wrong based on how you expect OU to look? Cause they looked awfully good, especially that young QB, in dismantling Alabama in January.

If we take care of business in the first 2 games as we should. We're rated as high as 32 in some polls so we could very well go into Okie game ranked. If the sooners play as they did against Bama we're in trouble. If they play us like they did Texas we've got a punchers chance. I'm delusional I know but I never concede any game.

It is very difficult to predict the outcome of this game. In 2010 FSU came in here in a very similar situation.......high expectations and a lot of question marks on the OU side of the ball. I think we were ranked #10 at the time and FSU in the top 20. Christian Ponder was their QB. It was over @ 1/2 time. The next year we won by 10 @ Doak-Campbell (E.J. Manuel @ QB) but it was a struggle. I see this series much the same way but I certainly didn't predict we'd blow them out in Norman and I wouldn't do that with the Vols. That was after we had not looked so good in our opener.

Assuming the opening line is in low double digits, I would expect the Sooners to beat the spread but I doubt if we win by 3-4 TD's unless the no-huddle/hurry-up creates chaos on your D (which is exactly what happened to the Seminoles).

Our D is legit and we haven't been able to say that since Roy Williams & Tommy Harris played. If TK gets hurt, all bets are off. Our back up QB's are very talented but have no game experience. The O we are running is much more versatile than when Landry Jones was our QB because of the threat of the QB run game.

We will force you to beat us throwing the ball. We will sell out to stop the run and we'll blitz from the locker room. We have tremendous team speed on D but of course nothing different than you all see regularly in the SEC.

I think the key is Trevor Knight. If he is everything we think, it could get ugly but if he is inconsistent or struggles, we may have to win with our D but much closer than expected.

Your team will not be intimidated by the atmosphere. While we sell out every home game our venue is no different than many in the SEC. If it's a day game, it could be brutally hot. Wind could be a factor as well. It's always windy in Oklahoma.

Cutting to the chase......probably a 14-17 point win for OU but no boat race. From what I have read on this forum your biggest concern sounds like your inexperienced O-line. I shudder to think what such a lack of experience will result in when facing our front 7 (the absolute strength of our team).

Traditionally, we always try and schedule a traditional power & this is no exception. Over Stoops' tenure we have played Oregon, UDUB, Alabama, FSU, ND, UCLA, etc. and we have home/homes scheduled going forward with TOSU, Nebraska, UCLA (LSU was scheduled but going to 9 SEC games on their schedule forced them to back out which was a big disappointment to OU fans. We wanted a piece of the Bayou Bengals and Lester the Molester is not too highly thought of in Norman). OU fans are stoked about the Vols coming to Norman.

......a comment about our loss to Texas. Just prior to that game, we lost our starting MLB (co-captain) and starting nose-tackle to season ending injuries. Their replacements were a true freshman and a RSF respectively. Texas exploited the situation by running it right down our throat. They also came into that always emotional game with 19 seniors who had never beaten Texas.

Finally, TK was injured and we started Blake Bell and the O we crafted together for Bell that day was pitiful. Even then we were inside the 10 late in the 4th and could have tied the game but in the end UT prevailed. Baylor schooled our young D.....no question about it.

Good information and a fair assessment of the game. Of course I'm a fan(atic) and on gameday I will be certain that we will find a way to win. It's a fan's nature I guess. I've always respected OU and though I'm all SEC enjoyed the Bama beatdown. Continue to post..good stuff.

Welcome to the board but please don't refer to Texas as UT here.

Doyle, cut me some slack. I have lived in Texas for 50 years and 3 of my 4 kids went there. I'll try and use Horns or as the Aggies like to say 'Sips (for Tea Sips). The Horns are our bitter rival. No game means more to Sooners than the annual blood bath on the 2nd Sat. of October on the grounds of the State Fair of Texas.

I think OU will underachieve like they have a tendency to do. I could see them going 10-2 with losses to either Tennessee,Texas,Baylor or Oklahoma State.

Three of those games you mention are home games so if we lose to Tennessee, or Baylor, or OSU it would certainly be a precedent since we've only lost 5 home games in Stoops' 14 years as HC.

Im not in the group that thinks we will get throttled. I think we can keep it close.

If WVU (4-8) can go to Norman last season and the score only be 16-7, then we can keep it close.

If TCU (4-8) can go to Norman last season and the score only be 20-17, then we can keep it close.

Kansas (3-9) only lost by 15

They also won other games by 8, 9, 10, 14

Am I saying we win? No, but we can. But I think we can keep it close.

This OU team is a dramatically different one than was on the field in the games you've mentioned. We were decimated by injuries throughout 2013 and we even dismissed our starting RB from the team midway through the season. It took 3 QB's to upset OSU in Stillwater. If you watched the Sugar Bowl you'll recall how Todd Blackledge raved about the job our O-line did with three starters out. Our RT was a converted RG, our LT & LG were both 2nd stringers & we had lost our original RG before the season even started. We lost arguably our best all around player, FB/HB & co-captain Trey Millard to a season ending injury & also our starting MLB & co-captain before the Texas game to a season ending injury. Because so many young players were forced to play because of these injuries our quality depth in 2014 is tremendous.

There is also the fact that we installed completely new O & D schemes before the 2013 season. We have now been in the Pistol & the 3-4 all year plus a bowl game and spring camp. We are much farther along than at this time last year.
