One Korea ... Soon?

The thing is, this is normally when NK starts asking for a whole lot more and reneges on whatever they agreed to

I doubt they would ever admit it but this is one case where it is/was the best solution. He is a one man show, not a regime and without much real support other than sheer fear. Normally another would take his stance but its doubtful anyone would in his case. No, I don't think we tried to directly assassinate him, only let it be known that anyone who overthrows him would have our backing. Let them clean up their own house.

Yes. That worked so well in Cuba.

Pretty old article. This relates more to the interaction at the Olympics. Credit is given to Trump, but also criticism for his approach potentially inflaming tensions. Still, this may have been the start of what is to come. Not surprisingly, NK gives Trump no credit. We'll see if anything truly comes of this. When we're talking about Kim Jun Un, there's always a question about sincerity.

Are you kidding?

3 months is old?

W and Obama had 8 years each to address N Korea.

Remind me again what they did to support denuclearization of DPRK.

Why bring Obama into this? I didn't vote for him. And I never touted any NK progress under him.

I'm comparing Trump to his 2 predecessors.

16 years. North Korea 🇰🇵 had zero significant progress towards peace with South Korea 🇰🇷 and denuclearization.

Who else should I bring into it?

Eisenhower?

Good news for once

Anybody remember that N Vietnam would return to the peace talks when they needed to resupply? I refuse to believe that N Korea could test one type missile and do the kind of upgrades they did in the short time span. I'd be betting more that they either ran out of currency (monetary or otherwise) or the supply line was cut or muzzled, and they had to scale back operations.

Yep.

Obama was sending pallets of cash to Iran. $1.7 billion. I've seen lots of rumors that money went to N Korea.

It had the unique point of "never been tried" before. Funny thing about the little yippy dogs that bark at the big German Shepherd behind the fence. Generally, fence or not, it takes only one time for that GSD to go bat**** crazy barking at that little dog to shut it up and make it run away.

We tried placating them. We tried sending food for them to shut down the programs. We tried being nice for how long?

Enter Donald Trump who is not so nice and says what a lot of us have been thinking for a long time. Using a way different tactic and way different (undiplomatic) words we've never used before to include pressure against the Chinese. Kim starts talking about nuking US territory. Trump says "go for it, b!tch. Let's play that game and see what happens."

Suddenly, NK wants to talk. We'll see where it goes.

Nixon opened up China. Trump opened up NK.

History repeats itself..... amirite?

Hey, a peaceful reunification could flood the market with mountains of 7.62x39mm surplus. As well as some Browning 1900 copies. Or even some converted AKMs.

So much I'd consider buying another rifle in that caliber.

If anything, I'd say the tightening of sanctions that have been choking the country for decades was finally too much. Trump does get some credit there, though he didn't originate the sanctions and the US isn't the only country applying them. Stepping them up in response to NK's nuclear threats was definitely the right move. Trump out sabre rattling Kim is just playground bravado. I wouldn't give that much significance. That's like a 300 lb linebacker facing down a 98 lb actuary with asthma. NK is no real threat militarily. It's a crappy little nation about the size of Pennsylvania.

Sad for you, but if peace comes to NK and SK, it will likely be on Trump's watch and he should rightfully get the credit. Just like Reagan got the credit for the fall of Communism in East Europe and the Soviet Union (though it happened on Bush 41's watch) Trump deserves the credit for getting NK back to the table. Let's face facts here, neither Obama nor Bush 43 did much to change the North Korean paradigm while in office.

They really haven't cared about starving their population in order to push the WMD agenda before. Why stop now? What changed other than a President finally saying "I'm your huckleberry" to their petty threats?

The previous 3 presidents served 24 years and did not make any significant progress in North Korea.

Trump's been in office for 15 months and liberals say Trump really deserves little to no credit.

This would be biggest foreign policy win since fall of Soviet Union.
