Only program with 6plus national titles in 2 sports?

Actually they have been awarded more than that.

No, they haven't. Only 2 of Tennessee's national titles were awarded by major selectors: '51 and '98.

Major selectors: AP, UPI, USA Today, BCS (and if one is really generous: FWAA).

Also women's basketball shouldn't be included with the other two sports. It's not in the same league as far as competitiveness goes.

Yes it is. I'm not saying Women's BB should be on par with Men's BB, but it is extremely competetive.

ESPN claims that the UCONN ladies are making a run at consecutive win record....how do they get anybody to pimp that with a straight face?

Free nude pictures of Rebecca Lobo. Oh, wait. Olberman doesn't work there anymore.

Probably more competitive than NCAA Women's Basketball

Actually no, UK has a UConn womens type strangle hold on that sport. 16 out of the last 18 titles, from what I understand. Its certainly more fun to watch that womens hoops though.

And, thats enough cheerleading talk. I feel dirty.

Aren't those 3 basically the same?

UPI was the original organizer of the coaches' poll, then USA Today took over. The BCS is not the coaches' poll, but the coaches are contractually obligated to select the winner of the BCSNCG.

I listed them all because, if you look up the national champ for a given year, you might see any one of those.

Oh, I understand the differences, I was just saying that there are really just two major selectors.

Same deal with OSU for 1961, but I'm talking about the present.

The FWAA poll is really no more significant today than it was in the early 60s. The AP and UPI were always the standard-bearers.

Anyway, my point being that Tennessee claiming 6 titles in football is absolutely no different than Alabama claiming 13. If the claim is from before 1951, then you can make an argument since the AP finalized it's formula and the UPI began that year. Anything after that point should be completely ignored if it wasn't a major selector.

But if you're going to claim a pre-51 title, you'd better have a great argument, and don't call it a "major" title.

Agreed, except I'd say that Tennessee claiming 6 is no different than Bama claiming 12. The 1941 title just stands alone, IMO.

'67 is only a slightly better claim than '41. And we have 5 others we don't claim, at least 2 of which are better than '67.

I feel like if Tennessee just now decided to claim 1956, it would still be better than 1941.

At least in those years, Tennessee finished number 2. Not saying it's a great claim, but it's much better than a year when you finished 3rd in the conference and 20th overall in all the other polls. As I said before, if Bama claimed 1966 instead of 1941, they would far less crap, but 1941 is the worst, IMO.

I acknowledged that '67 was a better claim than '41. I have no idea why Bama claims that one over '45. But after the advent of the coaches poll, Bama doesn't claim a single title that isn't AP or Coaches. Tennessee claims 2.

True, but one of them was the first year of the poll and I think Tennessee was still ranked 1 by a clear majority of selectors.
