Onside kick

Pains me to say it but Rucker has a good article up that also addresses that onside kick that really makes sense

That's one way of looking at it.

He's giving future opponents stuff to try and prepare for and have a mental "overload" on the fielda

This is the nature of Heupel Philosophy.
We could never kick and onside kick against Kent State and still beat them by 73 points.

That kick was:
- to keep his team engaged
- give much better opponents in the future something to worry about.
Or a kicker's call because they were lax

He’s exactly right.

Tennessee paid them good money to come down and play. And they just didn’t have the horses nor were they in the best physical condition. A lot of guys with big guts on that Kent State team.

Wasn’t necessary and believe we’ll be subject to a lot of criticism for doing it.
Don't want other teams or reporters saying nice things about us, Remember Saban saying Dooley is doing a great job at Tennessee, fast forward he says the same thing about Butch Jones. Some here bought the bait saying just give them time, Saban endorses him. Perfunctory compliments are for losers and also rans.

It’s not just the Reddit posters. There’s a thing call polls…. One by coaches and one by sportswriters and non coaches. Very few of either see the games but read about events like this which affects their opinions. Although I didn’t know about the way they lined up my impression was that it was “piling on” and I bet there are many who share that sentiment unless they know the whole story. The polls are a beauty contest whether we like it or not.
So, Spurrier would have never won a ship if you go by this post. That was when no playoffs and basically a mythical champion where Polls got you there. The playoffs will discount weak kneeled reporter's polls if you win your conference, you're in, no cheap talk matters.

On tv broadcast they pretty much described the onside kick. Kent St left it wide open to do and it’s gives teams you play something to think a about

I love the lack of mercy! It makes Conan very happy!
I like the aggressive style of play too, believe me. But his game was a glorified practice. Everyone knew it, even the opposing coaches comments from last week gave the "it's gonna get ugly" vibes. I'm just glad we have a coach that says, ok, you decline any official mercy rules, I'll just play my 4th string/walkons for nearly the entire second half, and will run the ball, and won't line up over the ball till 15 second mark on the play clock.

My exact thoughts were Show no Mercy!!
Then, Nice Coach! Way to show mercy!!

This was a glorified scrimmage where we were playing out different scenarios. That is more valuable than anyone’s opinion on whether we “ran up the score” or not.

We played 5 different QBs and at least that many RBs. We offered to run the clock. What are we supposed to do - take three knees and punt it back to them?

I always think of this Lou Holtz (yeah, I know) story when these issues arise. Bobby Bowden's WVU team had allegedly run up the score on Holtz's William and Mary team. The following antectode recounts the post-game exchange between the two coaches.

I got to coach Bobby Bowdeafterwarder and said, 'Bobby, we're friends! Why did you run the score up?' And he told me 'it's your obligation to hold the score down. If you don't like this score, then recruit better and coach better. But don't ask me to lower my level of performance to yours.'"

The UT special teams did what they were trained to do. They saw KSU line up and presented an opportunity; UT took advantage of it.

It’s not that. It’s an automatic thing that the kicker can kick onsides if they line up like that. Like other posters have said we did them a favor by putting that on film. They had zero chance in this game but in other closer games that could be the difference between a win and a loss. I’m not sure Wtf they were thinking by lining up like that.
Exactly. I think the coaches would have gotten on him if he hadn’t done it. I believe it’s an automatic call for the kicker and he executed it perfectly.
