Open practice updates.

Was Curt Maggitt out there last night? Really hoping he bounces back from the injury and has a monster year. We knew the kicking game was bad, but its frustrating to hear we seemed to have made zero progress. Didn't we have a kid that came in last year that people thought would compete with Palardy and he broke his leg in a freak accident in practice? Thanks ahead for any feedback.

Aug 27, 2012 - Place-kicker George Bullock, a freshman from West High School, broke his leg after a collision at practice over the weekend

UT freshmen LaTroy Lewis (ACL), George Bullock (broken leg) out for the season » GoVolsXtra

I thought Darr looked great last night, even when it was raining. He did shank 1 kick, but other than that, his punts had great hang time and were nice, tight spirals. Hopefully, though, he will be able to do that in games.

Darr is always good for 1 bad punt per game.. Seems like he was in mid season form

Doesn't matter who starts against Austin Peay, as soon as we lose our first game people will be screaming for one of the other three to come in.

I think that it does though. You want to have a starting QB selected to get the reps and get ready for the stiffer teams we start playing for week 3 & beyond.

Based on "expert" observations of one practice and a couple of compliments thrown toward the Fr of course.

This is a trend, he didnt take the job in spring ball, and he's going backwards now. Worley just is not that good as people want him to be. Im still sticking with my prediction of Nate starting, and it sounds like Worley is letting his crappy experience get the better of him. Worley has shown again and again that he just is not all that good. This open practice is just an accumulation of all the efforts of the yesterdays. We still have a week to find our starter. Just enough time for Nate to get the job. This open practice makes me look very good in all the happenings. Im sticking by 6-6 also.

This is funny. If the O looks good, "Ohs nos our D is horrendous". If the D looks good, "The O sux". It really is a no win.

I didn't realize that a nearly 60% completion percentage was crappy? The "gunslinger" Bray with a ton more experience had a lower percentage.

One thing that we need is a QB who can accept his failings and then improve upon them. The truly great QB's can learn from their mistakes and come out the next series or next game and light up the opposing Defense. What we don't need is for a bunch of people to start booing or bringing signs after a bad game that say something negative about the players, especially Quarterbacks.

I will never forget watching a pro game where the Jets fans were booing Chad Pennington as he was standing on the side lines on crutches because his crappy Offensive Line couldn't have blocked a decent college defense. We are better than that and I hope that people at least show some civility towards our own players.

39,000 at PRACTICE for a team with 3 straight losing seasons & 4 head coaches in the last 6 years. Vol fans again prove to be the best & most loyal group of people on earth!!!

My main concerns were the dropped balls and Pallardy still not being a reliable FG kicker. His punts were solid for the most part though so hopefully he can get the kinks out.

I think that people need to calm down and just wait to see what our performance is like against Austin Peay and Western Kentucky. I know that we will be favored but real games are going to tell you a lot more about the team than any scrimmage or practice ever will.

Let's see, "Worley just is not that good as people want him to be." You're 100% right. Nobody is as good as people want them to be. Somebody will always complain about something. You can provide starving man a breakfast of waffles, eggs, and three slices of thick bacon and a cup of coffee. Then he'd complain you didn't put sausage on his plate. It's always something or another.

I'm not so sure about this...........

I would go with one of the freshman and let them learn on the job the first 2 games.

Thankfully... you aren't the coach.

would you rather let them wait till Oregon and Florida to learn?

Not sure I follow your logic. Have there been reports that they have to play this year? That seems to be the only option you're allowing for.

I think an equal and opposite option would be that they red shirt and not learn on the field at all this year.

I'm not claiming to be an expert by no means, nor am I trying to say that Worley will not succeed at Tennessee. I'm simply saying that if he performs in any way similar to his performance today in practice, then he will not keep the starting QB job if he is declared the starter IMO. It's not a knock on Worley, it's just that nothing sticks out about his play to me.

Peterman looked as if he could do just as much, and more with the threat of his mobility and toughness. Who knows, maybe Worley comes out and sets the SEC on fire through the air. But the fact that he has yet to lock up the starting job, 2 weeks away from kickoff say a lot IMO.

imho, it speaks more to the fact that all four of them are learning a new system.

Also note this gem, buried in the post near the end:

This open practice makes me look very good in all the happenings.

I think a lot of the Worley hate is more about wanting to be right than wanting the Vols to just put the best QB on the field.
