Open practice updates.

I saw Marlin, in uniform, on the sideline doing push-ups, sit-ups and stuff during practice with another player in an arm sling. Not sure but it appeared he was being punished for something. Just the way it looked.

He might have just been doing what he would have been doing in "the hole". Maybe he tweaked his hip or something. I hope that's all. If he's being punished RIGHT NOW, then I doubt he sees anything but scrub minutes.

According to twitter, Peterman is outplaying Worley pretty handily

I think any of the other three quarterbacks seem better than Worley, but I am not a coach.

I stayed the whole time, and I didn't see that at all.

Worley not standing out could be a combination of things. He was going up against the starting D and I believe someone said it was raining during practice. Throwing and catching a ball in the rain is hard to do regardless of what level of football you are playing at. This could also explain kicking problems as well.

The other three were also playing in the rain. Dobbs looked the best of the three yesterday. Worley threw wobbly passes and just seemed more unsure of himself than the other three, which was surprising.

Like I said, I am not a coach.

I agree. I have seen some posts that credit that to him going against the 1s in practice, but what I saw last night some of those throws would have been terrible in a pick up game at the park. But as you said I am not a coach either.

With all the good and bad last night in practice, just the feel of being back in Neyland made the trip worth it. That is truely a magical place.

Needs to be a yearly event. Only in Knoxville can you get that many people in a stadium for a practice. We are the #1 fanbase in the country hands down.

In full disclosure, I am pulling for Worley to light it up this year...and Ferg to be the future of UT football. That being said ; I honestly just believe in Coaches ability to make the right choice. A few points that are important tho:

1 Worley playing against the 1s while the pthers played against the 2s is huge. Its like a varsity team against JV with our lack of depth on the DL, in the secondary, and bigtime at LB.

2 Players said that they were only allowed to use a very small portion of the playbook...and coach was only going to use the plays that had been run thousands of times in practice to avoid looking woefully unprepared ( like a back or receiver lining up wrong. Or a receiver breaking the wrong way, etc.) So the 1st team defense has seen every play the offense ran hundreds of times and I would bet knew exactly where the ball was going pre-snap. There waws a time when our offense was so dominant the defense could know where it was going and we still moved the chains...been decades though since that was the case.

3 I've been on VN a while so I know we do this every year. Itts fun to guess who the starters will be every year. For the first time in nearly a decade though I think WE HAVE A GREAT COACH and I fully believe in his plan and decision making. He will put the best man on the field regardless of public opinion.

I agree. His passes were very wobbly and most times inaccurate. I think Butch is giving him every chance to be the Quarterback, but I'm not feeling confident by what I saw last night.

I am with you totally. I want to see Worley suceed, but for me last night it looked like he was just uncomfortable in his own skin. He did not look as comfortable as any of the other three. But hey we all have an off day every now and then. I absolutely agree with number three CBJ gets it.

Yeah I think it is his job to lose. One difference from the few years past, I think we have a coach that will know the best path to take with the QBs.

So, judging by today's practice, our offense isn't very good and our defense is decent. Worley is not consistent, Lane is hurt, and our best freshman OL is hurt.

Kicking game is horrible.

That said, the kids are in great shape, and I love Butch Jones.

We won't really know anything till they actually start playing.

marcusluvsvols, will you please keep quiet? You're talking 100% complete sense. Worley haters don't even know what that is.http://www.volnation.com/forum/members/46956.html

It is starting to look like Worley is playing himself out of the starting job. This is getting interesting as to who will start versus Austin Peay.

I didn't see anyone standout at QB. I noticed that, in this system, the QB is either handing off, or keeping (to run) a large percentage of the time, and they have Worley run it more than you would think. For this reason, I think Peterman or one of the freshmen will take the job by the Oregon game if Worley doesn't separate. Peterman definitely looks better when passing rolling out to pass or when running on a QB-keeper.

I was there and watched the practice.

I cant remember the exact number but did it seem to you all, who were there, like the offense had fewer mistakes/penalties? I know there were some but it seems like this has improved over the course of fall camp.

It's hard to tell how much our defense has improved in these scrimages. They might be going up against one of the better Olines they'll face all year.

It's hard to tell how good our offense is. If our defense has really improved they may be going up against one of the better defenses they will see all year.

Point is these scrimmages are good for individual and team development excercises and at times showcases some talent.

They are not good for determining what the teams overall effectiveness will be when they are on the field complementing each other in real game situations.
