Option for cable cutters and football season...

My issue is comcast is my only provider and i think they force you to buy a package (tv+internet). Meaning i couldnt find a month to month internet provider
you must have talked to an evil sales rep because that's has not been my experience with Comcast. As a customer I have had their internet package alone in the past and for the short stint when I worked for them in wireless support I ran into many customers who only had internet service.

Yeah I've had kodi for a few months and love it. Just installed sportsdevil the other day but haven't got to use it yet. Hoping I'm not jumping back and forth between the different add ons looking for it. BG should be a good test run to make sure all goes well

Sports devil has the most options. Install it, then put a shortcut on your home page. Voo-Ah-Lah.

yeah I generally just use three..Genesis, Phoenix, and Sports Devil..I had ZeusTV but it wasn't very dependable...although they do have the PAC-12 and B10 network streams

I think you should be OK unless you have other devices going at the same time,,but I wouldn't listen to the radio feed at the same time it will be a few minutes behind..this is from Consumer Reports

How live is Sling’s 'live TV'?

The most striking difference we saw between the cable and Sling TV feeds was one of latency. Side by side, we found that Sling TV was running one to two minutes behind the programming on Optimum cable. We even tried it at the home of a staff editor who subscribes to Dish Network's satellite service and found Sling TV to be running about a minute behind the company’s own feed from space. We asked the Sling TV spokesperson about the delay, and got this explanation:

“Television signals of all types are never truly live. They all have delay from the time of content was captured and produced to the time a viewer sees the signal. Since Sling TV is a new service, we have chosen to be conservative in our signal delay to allow for congestion or other potential Internet propagation delays . . . We expect the perceived delay will be significantly reduced over time.”

Truth be told, most subscribers to Sling TV would never notice the delay. After all, how often are you watching the same TV program from two different sources at once? But it does raise the curious possibility that while you're watching a big basketball game on ESPN you could hear raucous cheering from your neighbors’ house only to discover—two minutes later—that the fuss was abut a mind-blowing, buzzer-beating, game-winning three-pointer.

You probably will notice a lag when you change channels. Even with a 15-Mbps broadband connection (ample for HD streaming), we generally experienced five-second buffering delays when changing from one Sling TV channel to another. That increased when we used the service on a 2.5-Mbps DSL connection, but we were impressed to find that, once a channel buffered, we were usually able to watch interruption free on that DSL line.

I just signed up for sling last night with SEC network...I am loving it.....only 25 a month...I have had a Roku for over a year and it is great....Highly recommend it......Going to watch a replay of last years game vs South Carolina...

What kind of antenna are you going to use?

I stressed over antenna types (20 mile / 150 mile; install on tower or in attic, etc) for days and finally went to wally world and bought a $40 Leaf just to see what I'd get. I'm about 20 miles from broadcast towers and the Leaf works great. My TV is in the basement so I stuck the antenna up in the floor/rim joists through an access in the basement ceiling.

Here's a link to a handy web site (TV Fool) to help you determine how far you are from TV transmitters which will help you figure out the antenna type you need.

Good luck with your cable-cutting adventure. We've been gouged by this industry for too long. I'm glad to see others joining the revolution.

I've been off cable for about a year but signed back up. The buffering and other small nuances tend to get on my nerves. One thing I missed is if there are a couple good games on at the same time there is no switching back and forth, not quickly anyway.

With my roku...I have not had any buffering problems.....everything has been really good......

I hope you and all the other cable cutters have a pleasurable experience with it. I was not on Roku, I was just signing on to Watch ESPN with my user ID from our house in Chatty that we still had cable at.

Believe me I wanted to cut the cable; we've been on antenna, Netflix and Amazon Prime since the rest of the family moved up here earlier this year. I don't miss cable one iota except when football season is happening. It wasn't one thing in particular that made me sign up for cable again, just a culmination of all the little nuances I spoke of earlier.

Plus comcast had a two year deal with 75Mb Internet and TV for $88. Of course you have to pay extra for the 2nd receiver and dvr but it's worth it to me.

The cable industry is changing, I think there will come a day when we will be able to pay for just the channels we want to.

Get a slingbox at sears for $99.99 and it will pay for itself because you can use slingplayer app on Roku, Apple TV and chromcast and stream DVR box to anywhere.

Thank ya sir!

I have a 60mb connection and sling tv. It constantly buffers, video and audio will desync, lags out, etc. It's a huge annoyance. I'm switching back. I gave it a shot and really wanted it to work..but it's not worth it.

Do you sideload from a USB or from your android? Having a hard time finding guides on how to go about this.

You need this: adbFire

You get on the same wifi network as the firestick, punch in the firestick's ip address. Connect and then start downloading .apk files to it. Easy as pie. No command prompt needed.

With buying a few subscriptions to these other services in order to watch the programming you want to watch, are you actually saving enough money per month to cut the cord?

I have
SlingTV with Sports package: $25 a month
Netflix: $9
Hulu Plus: Free from friend
Amazon Prime: Free from friend
Internet EPB: $58
Total: $91

Now, remove Sling, -$25, I'd still have everything else and pay an extra $80 for cable.

So, yeah, I save about $55 per month. That's two tanks of gas, a nice dinner with a cocktail or two with my lady, or whatever.

And even more than the savings is no contract. That's how cable companies really get you.

I cut the cord for a while and dropped Directv. I bought an HD Antennae for locals and an appletv for Hulu and Netflix.

It was fine for a while then realized I was missing several sporting events, shows, etc. I missed DVR and live shows the most. I will never do it again.

I got Uverse and love it. Very reasonable in price and great picture.

Do you remember the name of the app you downloaded to your Roku for local channels?

I've never thought about it, but then again, we have DirecTV for our satellite provider. So our data usage is mostly playing around online or streaming Netflix. We're moving on Saturday though, and I think I'm going to do Sling TV at the new house, along with Netflix, Amazon Prime, and adding Hulu. Who's your current provider is that has no data caps?

For that matter, anyone in Knoxville, please throw out your internet provider if they don't have data caps. I'm looking for possibilities to give Comcast the finger once we get into the new house.

I don't think Knoxville gets EPB. Good luck.

I don't see myself cutting the cord anytime soon. I didn't buy a nice 65" 1080p TV to watch streamed live sports etc. The times that I have done that the picture quality has been less than I would prefer. If that gets better in the future, then yes, I would consider it.

I have DirectTv right now, I switched to it from Dish when I moved back in the spring and tbh I like Dish better. The only channels I know on directv is ESPN, NFL and NBA network, SEC Network, HBO and Disney for my daughter. (AMC whenever TWD and Better Call Saul is running.) So I'm paying close to $70 a month, which will go up in a couple of months when my year promotion ends with Direct for about 5 channels. I think SlingTV has everything I watch. I already have Netflix, but would need to get Hulu, Prime, and HBO Go. I have an Apple TV and 2 smart TV's so I would be fine there. I'm really thinking about making the switch at the first of the year.

Right now Charter is doing a promo that I got yesterday. It is 60 mbp high speed internet and top 200 Channels in HD and free DVR service all for 79.99 a month no contract and price good for 2 years. Just $20 more a month for TV service because my internet went up last month to 59.99.
