Oregon's Gimmick Offense Should Put Us On Notice

Wanna know why Oregon is losing this game. One reason is because their coach made some really questionable calls in the red zone earlier in the game. The other reason is they had the ball for only 9:00 in the first half. That's because Oregon's defense is suited to play a game in which their offense scores so much that the other team can only pass. When their offense has a bad day or gets shut down, they don't have the defense to get a power running team off the field.

Seeing the recruits that we are bringing in on defense, I am not worried about that happening to us. I don't think three years from now in a big game that we will allow 94 and 96 yard drives. That's why Florida won with their spread offense, because they were a physical rushing team whether they had tebow or leak, and they had the defense to absolutely man handle people. Oregon doesn't have that.

One back sets. No full-backs or usage of tight ends. Read option. Reverse plays to pig howard, need I say more?

Yes, you need to further explain HOW those things are gimmicky. You can't just say "Read option is gimmicky because all read options are gimmicky. The reason it is gimmicky is because it is a read option, which is gimmicky." WHAT IS GIMMICKY ABOUT IT?

What I've learned from this thread...Baylor is Baylor...Cam Newton is Cam Newton...Patrick is Patrick...And rcvol is LONELY

One back sets are gimmicky??? So the ENTIRE NFL is gimmicky now?

NFL teams typically only use one back sets on 3rd down. They never use the read-option, however (maybe the Eagles). I don't mind a one back set for passing purposes. But unless you have Cam Newton or Tebow, the read option is fairly worthless. It is a scheme designed to succeed against mainly average defenses--to win 8-9 games per year. It is not going to get us to the promised land.

Anybody ever notice the number of snaps Alabama runs from the Pistol? Is that a gimmick?

Ok, do we have a Cam Newton or Tebow? Those guys are once in a lifetime college qbs. Won't happen again for a while.

Once in a lifetime QBs who were at one time on the same campus?

Manziel has already broken their single season records.

Seems like these "once in a lifetime" QBs come around quite few times in a lifetime.

Indeed.

One more thing to add.

Stanford has beaten Oregon's eyes shut and ESPN is crying over the fact that the PAC-10 is not going to surpass the SEC for the best conference in America.

Well one other thing.

Alabama is clearly the best team in America which sucks for us Vol fans. I despise all things Alabama but at least we know where we need to be to be relevant.

Guess you didn't watch the Super Bowl last year.

If Oregon had scored on their three redzone trips where they got two fumbles and a blown play on 4th and goal, Oregon would be running away with it, and we would all be saying that Stanford's gimmicky offense with 3 tight ends and a fullback was a complete waste of time, and it should be bannished from college football.

Stupid onside kick. Gimmicky nonsense. That ain't real football.

I am no expert on football so tifwiw.

If we ran that traditional offense, to win we would still have to have the players necessary to overpower defenses.

If anything, alabama's consistent top recruiting and cam newton & tim tebow leading teams to NC's shows that in college football its more important to have a higher skill/talent level + player execution than utilization of any certain offensive scheme.

For instance, I could decide to pass the ball all the time. If I have amazing an o-linemen, a great qb, and superfast wr who get open, i'll probably win a ton of games. I run a 3-yards and a cloud of dust offense with a weak o-line, I will be screwed.(I would say the best offense is one that plays to your players' strengths and masks their weaknesses. Also you obviously have to adjust somewhat for what other teams defenses are good at.)

For all the rest of CFB...This is exactly what would happen if Bammer met Oregon in the NC game. Only Bammer would be beating them worse.

So you haven't watched the NFL in what....6-7 years? Name me more than 2 teams that use a fullback.

NEVER use the read option? Watch the 49ers this week or a healthy RG3 or the Panthers, or Raiders or the Titans, etc.

You're missing the point. Those were instances where Oregon shot themselves in the foot. That wasn't about Stanford snuffing out a gimmicky offense. It was about Oregon being spazoids when they had a chance to score.
