Oregon's Gimmick Offense Should Put Us On Notice

Isn't it gimmicky to run the ball 80% of the time from a 3 TE set? The problem is that Oregon can't get off the field, and they have turned the ball over when they were in scoring range.

You can't be serious.

In general i think that zone read spread option is gimmicky. Are you even watching what Stanford is doing to Oregon's vaunted offense?

Point is Tennessee won a ntal chp with conventional offense.

How many unconventional offenses (spread option - zone read offenses) have won a BCS Championship or a Natl Chsp?

And you never answered my question. What, specifically, is gimmicky about our offense. You can't say that it is gimmicky because it is gimmicky. Be specific.

Basically every one before 1965....dang that gimmicky single wing!

Rcvol, It was a fundamentally different type of "option" offense, but I presume that you are quite aware that variant forms of the triple-option wishbone offense were effectively employed by Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Alabama, which enabled them to dominate their respective conferences for more than a decade.

Didn't know Stanford offense was playing Oregon offense? No wonder Oregon losing

Yeah. I'm serious. Oregon's defense is hot garbage against a power team. Stanford has chewed up clock. On the times that Oregon has gotten into scoring range, they have turned the ball over. This game says more about Oregon's defense than it does their offense. Disagree?

and Stanford got beat by Utah.

guess everyone should play like utah now.

Excellent point. I think that sometimes certain teams just have another teams number. Oregon has struggled with Stanford for years despite being able to walk through everyone else. Tennessee had the same problem with Florida during the 90's. We could walk through everybody but them, even if they were having an off year. Florida has always struggled with Georgia.

Minus a heisman winning quarterback, none. Spread teams also typically have soft defenses.

Bama has 3 Natl Championships in 4 freaking years.....

Whats your point!

When Tennessee won their natl champ in 98 did they do it with a zone read?

HELL Noooooooooo!

And what type teams have beaten bama in those years? Do they have even one loss from getting shoved around? Yet you think that the way to beat bama is to overpower them?

Agree, but they basically just had a variation of run-plays with little passing. Still smash mouth. Wouldn't call it gimmicky.

Auburn, Texas, Florida off the top of my head.

Nebraska - triple option under Osborne
Florida with Spurrier - Fun n' Gun
Oklahoma - wishbone
yes it has happened many times.

Oregon's up-tempo finesse offense DOES NOT work against solid defenses. We need to ditch the read option ASAP!!

If one bad game is a reason to ditch an offense, then coaches would just punt on first down and there would be a lot of ties.

Not that we have the same offense as Oregon.

Ok, do we have a Cam Newton or Tebow? Those guys are once in a lifetime college qbs. Won't happen again for a while.

Stop and think about what you just said.... Newton OR Tebow - "ONCE" in a lifetime??? Sounds like at least twice to me. Throw in Manziel, that's 3 inside 6 years. Not quite a lifetime.

Malzahn and Sumlin are doing well.

Doing well but neither have won anything of import as headcoach.

And Auburn had that QB - what was his name - the one who got paid to play - wout him there would be no Natl Chsp.

The same with Tebow - who perhaps was the best college football player of all time. And what did Urban do - if that offense was so unstoppable why did he leave one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in America..... Because that offense was not going to work long term in the SEC!!!!!! It worked for him at Fla for one reason - Tim Tebow.

I think LSU beat them that way. TAMU won by outscoring them, but we see where TAMU is at w their program. I don't want to be TAMU. I want to be UT, a physical offensive and defensive team. No gimmicks!

You do realize that defense is also an important aspec of the game?
