Our real problem is not the players, it's the coaching

These players struggle enough to execute our base plays. Their minds would probably melt if we tried to add trick plays right now
A lot of truth in this statement. It does make for a BORING unproductive offense.
Not sure where the disconnect is, coaching or players but I do know for a fact that it’s the responsibility of a well paid coordinator/coach to figure it out.
Halzle and Pope are over their heads imo…..

Totally agree about our play calling, w exception of our first drive. We need to call plays to our offensive strengths and avoid our weaknesses. Been harping about this all season.
We don’t have an offensive strength outside of Sampson and we’ve fed him a TON this year

Nah. It's both. Players failed to make several plays. Coaches failed to adjust and had the team poorly prepared. Plenty of failure across the board.

Reviewing the post mortem comments after last night's game, I see many comments blaming players. This is college ball, so you play the hand you are dealt. Nico always over throws his receivers on the long bomb, so delete it from the playbook. Sure, Dylan Samson is always good for 2-3 yards but we run that play up the middle too often. So if I, a TV room armchair doofus knows what play they will call next, then I'm pretty certain the opposing defense also knows it's coming.

Last night they called Sampson's number at mid field on a 2nd and 12. He gained 3 yards, and good for Sampson--that's what he does. But now the Vols are facing 3rd and 9, a low probability gain to convert. It stopped the drive. Are they incorporating their analytics?

The coaches have virtually no trick plays in their book. A fake punt at mid field is a play they can't even conceive of. They don't break up the plays enough to keep the opposing defense guessing. They don't have enough screen plays in their playbook; I saw only one screen last night. That stupid lateral pass to the sidelines has to go. The line of scrimmage discipline is atrocious, and it's obvious that all season Heupel has neglected the well established simple fix: execute pre-snap drills in practice.

The playbook needs a complete overhaul. Tailor the playbook to Nico's talents: short to mid range passes. More screens and more short slants to the sidelines. This will spread their defense deeper and wider and will enhance Sampson's rushing average. And finally, Josh Heupel needs to fire offensive coordinator Joey Halzle. The problem is the coaching.
What about a jet sweep? Have we run one all season?

We were totally out coached on both sides of the ball even though we brought a superior team to the field of play. After the first quarter they adjusted and we had few answers to their adjustments. Our defense provided no effective pass rush whatsoever from the 2nd quarter on and our offense just wilted. No? Then explain zero sacks and few TFLs? Also explain zero points in the second half with Nico getting sacked and when that wasn't happening he was running for his life the whole second half as well.

This was a total coaching meltdown and they should own it.

I agree there are things the Vols could have done differently to improve their chances last night, but if you had told me we would be 8-2 at this point with wins vs Bama, Florida and Oklahoma, I would have viewed that as a successful season so far.

I disagree. our QB and receivers act like they've never played together. GA's receivers are no better than our when it comes to abilities. However, they burned us all night long. Kirby started from the first play letting us know what the game plan was. It's simple. They performed. We didn't. I don't even blame our secondary. They did a phenomenal job. But you can only do so much. We need to reconsider everything about our offense except RB. Including the QB. Nico is a bust as far as I'm concerned. Second year on the team. 5 star, #1 QB in his recruiting class, starting in a bowl game, this season under his belt, and the coach is scared to throw the ball? When we do throw it, we look inept.
I think our passing game is inept because we're not calling simple pass plays that we know our QB can connect to our WRs. I want to see more short slants, screens, and short passes over the OL. Keep it simple for the freshman to instill his confidence.

The coaching staff is a work in progress, better than the recent past but not quite ready for prime time games against the other top SEC coaches. Hopefully the learning process will not take much longer.
This is Big Time NCAA SEC football. There is no time for learning. You bring your best game or go back to coaching high School.

We should never have lost to a team like Arkansas. We would have finished the season 11-1. And lets not forget the pathetic performances we had over puff teams in which we won by slim margins. These games exposed our weaknesses that did not become so obvious until last night's game.

If you watch the replay and some of the "film guys" breakdowns with all 22 angles, there are throws to be made. For instance Beck rolled right and threw his man open in the middle of the field for a big gain. Those exact plays are available last night, we didn't make them. Nico is a RS Frosh and will get better. Let's face it, he's mediocre right now without a dynamic receiver to take a hitch to the house. We must go get a dynamic playmaker for Nico to gel with for the next 2-3 years. Having your TE as your leading receiver consistently over the year is not the recipe for this winning offense.
BTW-has Bru caught a TD all year? How can we not throw him 50/50 balls?
Just curious, where are you viewing the All-22s? More directly, where can I view them outside of Anderson? Thanks.

While I agree 100% we shouldn't have lost to Arkansas, "should" isn't always reality. Even the better teams slip up and lose to teams they shouldn't (Notre Dame/NIU, Bama/Vandy, LSU/FLA. The ELITE teams don't slip up, but we're not elite yet.

Probably the first time we've had a lead against Georgia since smart took over. Team still looks a little young, especially at qb, and an away game with everything on the line. If butch were still here, I guess we could stack another brick.

It's not the coaching, it was lack of execution last night. I go full blast on bad coaching with no shame, but last night the Vols just got that ass whooped on both sides of the line of scrimmage, plain and simple.
Agree, for most part not the coaching. I would never get rid of Heupel considering where we were 4 years ago. People have short memories on this message board. Do people really want a coaching change !?!?! Do people forget we were the cellar dwellers of the SEC? Mostly lack of execution, the game plan was decent, not great. Having said that, We did not adjust for their tight ends making explosive plays and basically got whipped on the defensive line from a standpoint of not affecting Beck at all. Only minor coaching adjustment worth noting was that when we went fast on offense after a first down, they brought pressure, a quick screen to one of our tight ends would have hurt them. Hand it to GA, they have the blue print for taking away explosive plays when we go up-tempo, hopefully Heupel/Halze take note.

Bring back Cornbread so we can be in the cellar of the SEC. I agree with you guys. The possibility of going 10-2 is really miserable and horrible and as a Tennessee fan it really pisses me off. We need to start a campaign to hire somebody from Alabama and get rid of Josh, hopefully the entire state of Tennessee burns everything orange today and bulldozers at university in Knoxville flatten that dirty stain up there that’s called Neyland Stadium. Burn it all to the ground!!!

Anybody know if there’s an ancestor of Sherman lurking around and handy? You know the mad bastard that burnt Atlanta to the ground.

If we had Sherman, UGA and their fans would have panicked lol...

Silly thread though. Sure there are some issues with play calling but our program is alright. Insane expectations for a coaching staff that is just hitting their stride in recruiting to be on par with Georgia right now.

Had a 7-0 lead after the first play of the game last year. Beat them in 2016 in Smart's first year at UGA. Actually, we scored first in 2021 to go up 7-0 and were up 10-7 into the second qtr. Kicked a field goal in 2022 to go up 3-0 in the first qtr. It's not getting a lead that's our problem, it's keeping it when Georgia gets rolling. And they keep rolling us as the game goes on.

A lot of fans were predicting 10-2 as the ceiling this year and we have a big chance at it. The issue is that a lot of fans also though 10-2 would be good enough to make the playoffs but it isn't looking promising.

You should tell our former national championship QB coach all of this helpful information. He probably could use your help with the playbook
