Overconfidence - We are 3 last second plays away from being 3-3

In '98 we were one Arkansas QB making a bonehead move by putting the ball on the ground from not winning a National Championship. But he did. and we won.

Fans need to enjoy the success as a lot of bad streaks are ended. Glad to be in the conversation, for the last 10 years I feel like we have been watching football season through a window. We can see it but really not involved directly. Now we are front and center in the middle of the action again and it feels great. I make no projections for this team but am looking forward to watching and enjoying the rest of the season.

We are all admittedly on cloud 9 right now. For many of us younger fans, this is the best time to be a Vol fan in our lifetime. Saturday was no doubt euphoric. That said, I’ve read a lot and listened to some fans on social media and radio and many are acting as if we are now invincible. This is only a segment of fans but it seems to be a big portion. Too many of us are partaking of the RAT POISON!

Crash and burn is the worst feeling. While I don’t believe that is going to happen, we have to remember that we have literally won 3 games on the last play of the game. While UGA is the biggest game left and will be our final real obstacle before the SECCG, we gotta take KY seriously as well. Why are so many overlooking them? They have a bunch of dudes that will play on Sundays, 2 weeks to rest, a stout D, and have the best RB in the league. We only beat them by 3 last year (and we likely would have lost if the refs had caught the Levis face mask). There’s a reason the line is only -5.5. We all saw Missouri almost pulled an upset on UGA.

Perspective is important. We are one QB injury away from disaster. So for those who believe they should just go ahead and hand us the title, I simply suggest to enjoy this time but slow your roll so we all don’t look like fools to the world if we slip up. Other SEC fan bases would love nothing more than to see us crash and burn now. That said, I believe we are the best team in the country and this ride is amazing! I will talk so much smack come December if we get to and win in Atlanta. But for now, one week at a time is the way to get to the promised land.

GBO!

Plus, if LSU had just scored 28 additional points at home, they would’ve got us too

We’ve played fantastic the past 2 games and are trending upwards. It’s ok to be confident in your team.

Love these threads.

People compelled to calm everybody down . . . You're a fan It's OK to enjoy this. You don't have to be focused. You're not lining up to play next Saturday.

P.S. - I wish I could blast the phrases "rat poison" and "slow your roll" into the sun lol.

1988 was my freshman year at UT, and I suffered through that 5-6 season. The 1989 season, and the next few years were some of my favorite years of UT football. The rebuild, the momentum, that all culminated in the late 90’s was something to behold. Those early 90’s teams were gritty and mean, full of JUCO mercenaries, we had a home field advantage that the media spoke about. Nobody wanted to play us at home…we gained a reputation as a team the could ruin your season, whether by beating you or beating you up.

This season, starting midway through last year, has a lot of the same feelings. It’s special and feels like we are building toward something. So, no matter what happens this season I’m not taking it for granted. I’m pleased to have the SEC East as a possibility halfway through the season. The Division is always my first goal. Until you secure that you don’t really have a right to look past it. Good things happen when you win it though. Everything opens up. Like I said earlier…we are playing with house money right now.

You can say that about a lot of teams that go on runs. Hell, just look at UGA barely beating Missouri. And in 98 we could have lost at least 3 games that we somehow won. You have to have some luck to win it all, but it’s also very good coaching which has turned close games into wins. We’ve had many close games in the past where we found a way to lose. Now we’re finding ways to win

A couple things here:

1)We played the best back in the country on Saturday, and it’s not close.

2)The face mask no call is irrelevant because they converted on 4th down and then turned it over on downs

3) We lost to Bama 52-24 last season. We beat them this season. This season is not last season. Don’t care if we beat UK by 3 last in Lexington .
We gained 31 points on Alabama compared to last season so we must beat Kentucky by 34 this season 😁

Most teams would have lost one or two games on the last play if not for the play going their way. This is a circular file argument.

We're living the dream right now, and I do not want anyone to wake me up. The reality is we've been lucky and it is always better to be lucky than good. I think it was Richard Petty that said luck is when opportunity meets preparation (probably a misquote but that's the gist of it.)

We are where we are because of a coach who gets what Tennessee football means. He is able to convey, train, inspire, condition his team into just that, a TEAM. This is not a roster of 5 star recruits but a roster of talented young men who have been able to grow those talents into five star players in the real world out there on the field. They have every right to be proud of their accomplishments, and as I heard on one of the sports shows, "Right now they have the potential to beat any team in college football." In a week and a half we will be able to test that theory and prove it to the entire sports world.

I think of the phrase "cautiously optimistic." Not because of any lack of faith in the Vols, but after the past few years of bad luck, bad coaches, and a few disasters thrown in I admit I am personally gunshy about being overconfident. I know the euphoria of watching Peyton and Tee and I also know the horror of losing to Georgia State. I never want to feel that horror again, and the euphoria I never thought I would feel again is back in full force this season. In my gut I think the Vols are unstoppable this year--and pray my gut is right.

Having said that I recall visiting my daughter and son-in-law in Texas on Halloween a few years ago, a bad year for Tennessee football, and I was introduced to a neighbor of theirs bedecked in Alabama Crimson. "He's a big Alabama fan," my son-in-law said as he introduced him. "I am a Tennessee fan," I told him, "but these days it is a tough place for a fan."

I felt I was being humble, courteous, and self-deprecating. The Bammer's response was, "Not for me. We are so great in Alabama, no one is better than us and I love Alabama and never cared for Tennessee anyway. Alabama is the best there is." I just turned my back and walked away as he continued mouthing off.

I pray in our success that I never cop that rude attitude.

I thought of him Saturday night. I hope he was watching and remembered that conversation.

Jeff - You know better than that nonsense, man. If only I had a penny for every time you’ve been historically wrong on your takes, particularly about your game predictions/scores, I could have reimbursed for the goal post all by myself. Enough with your rudeness.

What is your point? We closed out the game in those 3 instances. Turns out Tennessee is a team that closes.

The fans aren't taking the field and playing in the games.

Our mental status doesn't have an impact on the games.

It is up to Heupel and the team captains to keep the players grounded and focused for the duration of the season.
