Overconfidence - We are 3 last second plays away from being 3-3

What are you on about? Both you guys accounts are barely a month old.

How the heck do you use "historically wrong" as an adverb?
Did you have a previous account you deleted?

@Jeff Clark has 2,540 posts. By the penny that's $25.40 cents. That's a good deal on goal posts.

I don't think you're a troll, but your post was kind of all over the place and seemed a little sanctimonious IMHO. I think that might be why you're getting some negative responses.

I've got a confession. I ended up making a fool of myself with long rambling posts when I first registered my account. I thought I knew allot more about football and UT than I really did at the time. I quit trying to be right, arguing, and responding to rebuttals. Then I just started trying to be a part of the conversation and before I knew it I was developing a rapport with many knowledgeable posters.
If you don't like my posts put me on ignore because i'm going to post about what i want to. That's what message boards are about. I don't like your response and i just put you on ignore.

Sorry if that came across wrong, I was replying to OP. Tying to point out how absurd OP was coming across on the off chance he's here in good faith.

Your posts are great. I've liked everything you've posted since you got here. Wasn't trying to come at you at all.

Doesn't really matter what the fans think. As long as the players and coaches are staying grounded and taking it one game at a time, that's all that matters.

I don’t believe that is going to happen
Then why are you posting this?
best RB in the league
About ten other RB's have something to say about that: 2022 SEC Player Rushing Stats | ESPN
a stout D
Statistically equal to Alabama's defense, after facing Tennessee's offense.
QB injury away from disaster
Milton seems very serviceable in limited action so far this year.
don’t look like fools to the world
All fans look like fools, that's why it is fun.
I believe we are the best team in the country
Again, then why are you posting this?

This reeks of a troll.

We are all admittedly on cloud 9 right now. For many of us younger fans, this is the best time to be a Vol fan in our lifetime. Saturday was no doubt euphoric. That said, I’ve read a lot and listened to some fans on social media and radio and many are acting as if we are now invincible. This is only a segment of fans but it seems to be a big portion. Too many of us are partaking of the RAT POISON!

Crash and burn is the worst feeling. While I don’t believe that is going to happen, we have to remember that we have literally won 3 games on the last play of the game. While UGA is the biggest game left and will be our final real obstacle before the SECCG, we gotta take KY seriously as well. Why are so many overlooking them? They have a bunch of dudes that will play on Sundays, 2 weeks to rest, a stout D, and have the best RB in the league. We only beat them by 3 last year (and we likely would have lost if the refs had caught the Levis face mask). There’s a reason the line is only -5.5. We all saw Missouri almost pulled an upset on UGA.

Perspective is important. We are one QB injury away from disaster. So for those who believe they should just go ahead and hand us the title, I simply suggest to enjoy this time but slow your roll so we all don’t look like fools to the world if we slip up. Other SEC fan bases would love nothing more than to see us crash and burn now. That said, I believe we are the best team in the country and this ride is amazing! I will talk so much smack come December if we get to and win in Atlanta. But for now, one week at a time is the way to get to the promised land.

GBO!

You are correct that we have three close wins. I am sure most everyone has also thought about this. Or not. But I have.

Two things

In the past, we had a tendency to lose games like this. When you look at all the breaks that went against us in the 2nd half vs bammer, its almost a miracle we won, but it wasn't luck. The team fought through it. That is also very true of Pitt and gators. Contrast that with the nightmare season of 2012 when we had Bray, Hunter and Cordorelle, all future NFL players and Cordorelle I think made a pro bowl or two. That team found wasy to lose, this one finds ways to win.

Second, we have had so many bad breaks the last few years, we are due, WAY OVERDUE, to win a few close games. Think of Lane in 2009 (his fault, but I that's a separate topic).

So just sit back and enjoy it. It happens all the time to other teams.

Take bammer. They needed a whole series of miracles in 2011 to have the rematch with LSU and they got every single one of them. Then got to play Les Miles. The result was almost a foregone conclusion, but bammer has repeatedly been given almost a bye into the playoffs and had numerous lucky breaks over the years.

Maybe its just our turn.

Now go away and quit harshing my buzz! :p

It is with some of them. But they’ve obviously been at this longer. As our winning culture continues to evolve, so will the mentality of more of the fan base.
If your mentality still needs to "evolve"... then take up feelings like this with your therapist. Hint: That's not us on this forum.

Heupel had as a goal since taking over to change the culture at UT so that the Vols no longer hope/wish to win... but expect to win. You know, that "invincibility" thing. I played for a great HS program many years ago... and that same attitude is what separated winners from losers and particularly in tight games. The team has "evolved" completely now. Try catching up.

IDK why this post is getting so much hate. He isn't being a NegaVol, just saying to not get overly confident or be apoplectic if things don't work out the way we all want them to.

This kind of post is quite frankly dumb. Florida state is 3 possessions away from being undefeated. Texas thumps Bama if Ewers doesn’t get hurt. Missouri is a false start away from beating Georgia… we can do this all day.

The difference is good/great teams win when their back is against the wall and bad teams fold.

How many times in the past 15 years have we been the ones who fold? ‘09 Bama game, ‘15 OU game, ‘14 UF game, and on and on.

I'm old enough to remember a season where:
- a DPI on the opponent led to a FG as time expired
- a missed FG by the opponent led to a victory in OT
- a last minute fumble led to us driving in for a game-winning TD

Oh my goodness, we could have lost three games in '98!

And don't forget a call in a game where the Ref's screwed up the call of the punter kicking the ball into the endzone resulting in a safety vs spotting it at the point of kick.
Destiny served up nice.

Remember 98? I do, we almost lost to Syracuse game1, and who can forget Clint Sterners fumble. There is a slim difference between losing and winning
Good teams seem to get lucky more often. Some refuse to embrace that.

Every championship team has things that break their way.

Surely you realize that you could have written this during our 1998 season, right? We weren’t supposed to win much of anything that year—Peyton had gone and we were breaking in a new QB named Tee Martin.

And (somebody correct me here) I do believe that that 1998 team was also three last-second plays away from calamity. We almost lost to Syracuse, we almost lost to Arkansas, and there was one other game that we won in the last few seconds…can’t recall it right now. I think it was a game before Syracuse.

That year taught me and tens of thousands of other orange-bleeders about the importance of luck, destiny, fate, whatever you want to call it. We couldn’t believe our eyes watching those three near-losses. It’s like something was meant to be, somebody had his finger on the scale, etc. It was a special kind of surreal magic that played out. The ball just kept bouncing our way, we kept dodging bullets, and we ended up national champions at 13-0.

I don’t (yet) feel that way about this team or this season. A few weeks ago, everyone I know and me were thinking 8-4 or maybe, just maybe, 9-3. And here we are in October and 12-1 is a real possibility…a staggering achievement considering where we were just 18 months ago.

This team has already exceeded our expectations, right? Let’s enjoy the ride…

Tbh fair statement. However, you also got to think we got an offense that allowed us to win those games. In years past we would be looking for jon gruden and wondering if that's his plane leaving Knoxville.
That might be OK if someone had started a thread saying, "Am I getting too overconfident?" I think his unsolicited and largely unmerited advice just rubs some people wrong.

Stop reading when OP said kentucky had the best running back in the SEC. Sir did you see Gibbs? Gbo!
Probably the one thing he said that I thought had merit. Gibbs is amazing. He and Rodriguez are different kinds of RB's. I think your opinion on which one is best comes down to which things you value most in a RB. Gibbs is downright scary in space. He has great feet and vision. But he needs an OL to provide some creases. Rodriguez is a classic power RB. This year he's his own best blocker. UK's OL is terrible.

Wow.
Negativity is just ugly.

FACTS:

UT has the #1 offense in the country.

They have punted a combined grand total of 3 times against Florida, LSU, and ALABAMA.
Let me say that louder--THREE PUNTS AGAINST THREE RANKED SEC TEAMS!!!

Geez, we all know they have to take it 'one game at a time', but "shiyut fahr" as they say in the mountains, some people would bitch about a bravo juliet.

Wait….everyone needs to think of it from a different angle. We are only 6 opening plays away from not even playing this season.

It is worth noting, true. I look at it like this. We knocked the rust off against Pitt. They did some things to slow us down and the reality is we didn’t execute all that great against Pitt. We wore FLA out and “should have” beat them by two scores. I think we lost focus a little bit, maybe got out over our skis and thought we had it won. We learned from it. Everything was clicking by LSU and we finished them off in a big way…and they just beat the Gators. We kept the pedal down and the focus on against Alabama and got an epic win. We knew that game could go either way.
We’ve gotten better each week (awesome to see) and my guess is the coaching staff and players learned some things from the Bama game as well that will prepare them and make them better for the games ahead.
