'17 PA CB Lamont Wade

I'll say this, I give credit where credit is due. Especially at DB, maybe I'm wrong but I'm sticking to my guns on this one for sure. 😎😎😎😎

I hope we land this kid and we get to find out if he starts. As long as Colton Jumper doesn't move to CB then I'll be ok with him getting beat out.

You know who else was a 5* that got downgraded to a 4*?

Shy Tuttle

Not sure that really means anything but just throwing it out there.

Baloney is on your side. BB, who knows a thing or two about DBs, thinks he is overrated. Also, Baloney is on your side. I'm just saying if you look around at the people supporting an argument and realize those people don't know anything other than what the 24/7 Composite tells them, then you might just want to re-evaluate. It might not change your mind but it is worth noting.

I appreciate your ability to post and not take differing opinions personally. I don't know squat about talent evals so I have to stumble along like most people and depend on those that do.

I don't know anything about player evaluations except on the rare occasion when a kid just really jumps out on film and it is a no brainer. Tyler Byrd and Jarrett Guarantano are the two guys I was most impressed with by watching their highlights last year.

The kid is a 5* corner and that is not by accident. Who cares if Balogna agrees with me? So does Rivals. I'm not a player evaluation expert. Don't claim to be.

Is Breakerboy supposed to be an expert? If so, I didn't know.

Ummmm I think of him like I thought of Derrick Green at RB. 😎😎😎😎😎

Well that's just like your opinion man.

He probably stays in PA but I think he is pretty interested in UT and playing in the SEC. Its just good to get guys in that area to look at us and visit multiple times.

No expert but look at it like this. Tyler Byrd wasn't a 5 star but he looked MUCH better than Wade. Now why is he a 5 star? Recruiting services will let parents buy stars if they want to. Did you know that? Lol

Good to get ballers from anywhere.

I'd take most Louisiana kids over the Pennsylvania boys though. And the two kids we got from there are NICE!

Man, I appreciate the stuff you bring to the board but if you ask me to pick between an unranked 3* defensive back and the #1 corner in the country and #9 player overall I am going with the 5* ten times out of ten.

That doesn't mean that those guys won't end up being good players for someone but I'm gonna take my chances on the kid ranked 500 spots higher.

This isn't your typical 5 star CB either. Like I asked, does he look better than Byrd, Osborne, or Warrior when they were coming out? None were 5 stars. I'm no hater especially on DBs. This kid just doesn't look like a 5 star CB. Nothing about him screams 5 star to me. But I guess you will see. Name one thing physically that's outstanding about him. Because I'm waiting to see it. 5 star guys jump off the film immediately. His video does nothing like that to me.

Warrior, Osborne and Byrd were all rated 75-100 in the nation by rivals. That is a very high 4* ranking for all 3 of those guys. Nothing to sneeze at so comparing him to those guys isn't the same as comparing him to an unranked 3* guy.

I'm not an expert nor do I pretend to be so you won't see me analyzing film. His ranking and offer list is enough for me to trust that he is a great prospect.

That last paragraph is a completely rational approach to take. However, I do not understated how the recruiting profile opinion of Bob Welton/CBJ has not proven to you that it carries significant weight by this point?

I like those guys and it does carry weight. My guess is that they would take Wade in an instant. Taking the other guys now doesn't mean they like Wade less. Just means Wade hasn't committed anywhere yet.

Do I think recruiting gurus are flawless? No. But here is what Mike Farrell, recruiting director for Rivals says about him....

He sounds very positive still and that kid can ball, he's one of my favorite recruits in this class.

Offer list: 5*
Ranking: 5*
Scouting director opinion: 5*
TN offer? Yes
One of our main targets? Yes
Vol staff working to get him on campus multiple times? Yes

Why would I not want us to land this kid?

I think most would agree with you. However, we have to know that what recruiting services say about a player or how they rank them is meaningless to coaches.

Services look at film and send people to watch these players in practice and in games nd gauge their performance and their athletic ability. They are not limited by rules that tell them how often they can do this.

Coaches will do the same thing, but are bound by rules that limit this. But, you have to know that coaches know a great deal more about what they are looking for and how to gauge performance and ability.

This is why I have a great deal more confidence in coach Jones and his staffs rankings of players than any services rankings. To me it would be like taking 10 partially blind judges along with 10 full sighted judges to decide a beauty contest. I would rather accept the decision of the fully sighted judges.

We have offered Lamont Wade and are recruiting him.

I trust my evaluations over Farrell any day. He's horrible. IMO

Oh and top notch Dbs I don't care where they go to school I always give them props. He's a decent prospect just not 5 star level to me at all.

Fair enough. How do you think your evaluations stack up against the guys who offered Lamont Wade?

How many really pressed for him? They aren't waiting around on him like a top 10 overall prospect.

That's also a fair point but at the same time he has the offer list.

He also seems to have narrowed it down to a few schools and all those schools are still pursuing him. We are pursuing him still as well.

You're not going to convince me this kid isn't a take. If in 3 years he is at Jacksonville State or floundering on the depth chart somewhere, bump this thread and make me eat the crow.

I don't want the kid to be a bust first off.

Secondly, Derrick Green was recruited the same way and I was adamant about not wanting him. Coaches miss too........
