The Kurds are already armed and on their border. And neither Turkey nor Iran can stand that.
The problem arises from a good portion of the natural gas and oil fields in Turkey being in the Eastern portion. And specifically the portion that is predominately Kurdish. So if (hypothetical) Kurdistan was to become an independent nation, the eastern portion of Turkey as well as the northwest portion of Iran would clamor for independence to join that new nation. And you likely end up with a civil war and/or a insurgency inside of Turkey. More so than already exists. Which is why the Turks aren't ready or willing to accept a nation of Kurdistan. It comes down to control.
Has a familiar ring to it though.
If I was in charge? I'd get ready to meet with the world leaders at the G20, include Russia and state America's readiness to recognize Kurdistan as an independent state if the population wanted it. And be ready for all sorts of economic and military support. There are more battlefields than just military when it comes to ISIS. And recognizing a de facto nation that has put forth a huge effort against ISIS and rewarding them with what they are begging for would be a finger in ISIS's eye. As well as the Turks which I don't care for. And Iran who can eat a turd sandwich for all I care.
Just my thoughts.
