I seem to recall there was some questionable picks. I went back and looked, and Rutgers made the First Four after losing in the Big Ten Quarterfinals. Rutgers had a better Q1 record than A&M, but they also had multiple losses in Q2 and Q3 and a loss in Q4. They were much lower in the NET. Their nonconference SOS was 312. They beat Purdue, so it seems like the committee emphasizes a single win over a top ranked team over other factors (kind of like Florida this year).
Notre Dame was in the First Four and had a worse NET than A&M and very similar resume and lost in the Quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.
Indiana was in the First Four and lost in the Semifinals in the Big Ten tournament. Very similar resume to A&M.
Wyoming was in the First Four and lost in the Semifinals in the Mountain West tournament. They had 1 Q1 win and non conference SOS was 152.
There may have been some automatic qualifiers that pushed these teams down. But, I think in hindsight, that committee did not care one bit as to how teams fared in the conference tournament.
