Path to a #1 seed

I personally remember that when we beat Texas A&M for the SEC Tournament title, we got no boost in seeding for winning and they got no boost off the bubble for reaching the final. I imagine the committee either changes their mind about the relevance of the tournaments year over year or more likely they create the narrative for their choices after they have already made them.
As I recall, A&M would’ve been in had there not been multiple major upsets in the small-conference tournaments leading up to Sunday, which took those at-large bids away from the power conferences. They were a victim of the numbers that year.

A&M was excluded in order to include a Rutgers team that was ranked 30 spots lower on the NET and Kenpom, and which lost its first conference tournament game.

I seem to recall there was some questionable picks. I went back and looked, and Rutgers made the First Four after losing in the Big Ten Quarterfinals. Rutgers had a better Q1 record than A&M, but they also had multiple losses in Q2 and Q3 and a loss in Q4. They were much lower in the NET. Their nonconference SOS was 312. They beat Purdue, so it seems like the committee emphasizes a single win over a top ranked team over other factors (kind of like Florida this year).

Notre Dame was in the First Four and had a worse NET than A&M and very similar resume and lost in the Quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.

Indiana was in the First Four and lost in the Semifinals in the Big Ten tournament. Very similar resume to A&M.

Wyoming was in the First Four and lost in the Semifinals in the Mountain West tournament. They had 1 Q1 win and non conference SOS was 152.

There may have been some automatic qualifiers that pushed these teams down. But, I think in hindsight, that committee did not care one bit as to how teams fared in the conference tournament.

Richmond was the big one.

You are correct in saying they just create the justification narrative that backs up their choices. They don't want to be held accountable for any inconsistencies, or bias shown towards certain conferences or teams that are traditional basketball powers.

Points to the list of things to consider that’s as long as your arm. Once they’ve set the field, they have plenty of ways to justify.

I don’t think you can definitively say must win, you have no clue what other teams will do, specifically Alabama and Duke to close the year.
I think Duke is pretty safe as a 1 as I think they’d have to lose 2 down the stretch to drop and I don’t see that happening. It’s possible, of course, just not likely. They have a weird road game at Illinois this weekend, which will be interesting. Too bad Illinois has struggled with injuries and illness. Still could be a good game though.

If Illinois were to beat them on a neutral court that is going to tell me a lot about this Duke team.

Yea, if they lost to Illinois it becomes much more plausible.

At this point, Net Quad 1 games, record, Number of Quad 1 games maybe a/the factor. 4 out of 5 could be Net Quad 1 games. LSU is currently a 78 and South Carolina 94. A LSU win in its final 4 games would help but unlikely. Texas A&M (A) Alabama (H) and Ole Miss (A) will all be quad 1 games. Can't hurt win all five and yes it will come down to the dreaded committee's opinion. Tricky. Plus conference tournament should could add at least 1 more Quad 1 game.
Too much basketball to be played.

on3 just put as back as a 1 seed just dont flub this up saturday
let's be realistic though. it's a road game against a top 10 team. there will be even more carnage, but at least everyone else in the sec has to deal w/ it too.

i bet bama has at least two more losses. so i bet we can surpass them. my concern is the houstons and dukes who play sissy schedules overtaking us in the end simply because of our loss count. i'm sure the committee would like to avoid 3 sec no. 1 seeds also even though we all know we deserve it.

Houston plays two top 10 teams plus two Jekyll & Hydes (Kansas and Baylor) in their last five games. If they get a #1 seed they will have earned it.

if we beat A&M on the road saturday with 9 Quad 1 wins it'll be pretty close to clamping down the 1 seed IMO
