Pearl Achievements

long time reader first time post. let me butt in by saying that without pearl, there would be no ut basketball to speak of. some of you people obviously wish pearl to be gone so that tennessee basketball could return to the prominence that it enjoyed over this past century before he arrived. let me remind you that the level of success that ut fans have recently enjoyed came to us when bruce came to us. think about that

No offense but your "point" has been made about 1000 times around here already and has been discussed about 1000 times.

I guess it's now a sunk cost.

It is, , but I'm not arguing it's wasted. I'm simply making the point that someone else could have had similar success for the money and that the absurdity about our history is exactly that.

I wouldn't argue that someone could have had similar success. But in that case the benefits are the same as the opportunity costs. I mean, honestly, how much further could a similar caliber coach have taken the team that we had in Bruce's first couple of years, which were filled with Buzz's recruits? This was his first true year with his recruits, and yes, he did underachieve to expectations. But overachieving with those players 3/4 years isn't too bad.

I'm not sure if you just aren't aware of coaching salaries or what, but Bruce was hired for $850,000. That's not exactly elite pay for coaches when Gillespie makes $2.5 million and Donovan makes $3.5 million. So, I'm not sure who $850,000 would have attracted, but to act like that is such an astronomical salary is ridiculous. Pearl makes $1.6 million now, which I believe is 3rd in the SEC.

850 was market or more for his resume. Had Pitino walked in, we would have paid him.

You dismiss the value of having the coach on board who could take us t the next level. Even lesser success early would have been worth it for a guy coaching a method that wins tourney style games.

He made $1.6m this year in the first year of a contract which will, on average, pay him $2.3m per year. Which is up there towards Calipari, Pitino, et al. territory.

I would have thought that $2.3m/year would get you a coach who could have figured out a way to have his taller, crummy-shooting team at least try to do something on Friday besides just heave up threes.

wasn't his question...
I bet John Beilein's career winning percentage probably doesn't meet most people's numerical standard for greatness. I'd love to see someone tell his peers he's not a great coach.

I'm not trying to pick a fight here, but his resume isn't that much better then Pearl's. He's made it to the elite 8 once, and the Sweet 16 once. Won the NIT. Pearl's been to the Sweet 16, 3 times, won the Div II Championship.

As I said, tell Beilein's peers that Bruce Pearl is on par with him. Then watch grown men laugh like nine years olds.

Pearl has got people expecting more than Tourney bids. That means something doesn't it?

Pearl's style doesn't bode well in the tournament. Tennessee has a coach that wins a lot of regular season games that gives everyone high hopes come tourney time. Then, Tennessee goes home early.

I prefer banners over stats myself

I hate that this thread had to be created.
I love where the program is right now, and understand this season wasnt the best but they won the SEC East competed for the SEC title.

Since people want to complain about Pearl, why don't we get good ole Buzz back? He was awesome wasn't he? He hyped the students up for the game, got the building noisy and led us to the NCAA tournament and got us a #1 ranking for the first time ever! (end sarcasm)

I just don't know what people expect. I believe Pearl was the best option when we hired him and still is a great fit for UT basketball. There is energy and excitement surrounding the program, along with NCAA tournament berths.

How can we ask the guy to do any more with the situation that he arrived here with and the time that he's had? Let him get the complete team he wants and then we can bash the guy if he doesn't succeed. Just my opinion, maybe I'm way off-base. Go Vols!!!
