Pearl embarrassed, but hopes violations doesn't result in termination

there will be a lot of investigating going on in the next 12 month of the basketball program. When a coach lies to the NCAA they usually come down twice as hard with penalties. Hopefully no wins or no banned from post season play will come into play

Don't worry about that. We didn't pay players to play here. All we have to worry about is making sure Pearl stays on as head coach.

Yeah, as long as you don't pay players, the NCAA doesn't care what you do. Cheating and lying is easily looked over.

I believe the NCAA will make a decision in April and the result will be that Pearl will be suspended from coaching for a specific period of time, perhaps all next season. Based on an interview with Hamilton in the Tennessean, I also believe UT will then fire Pearl. Hamilton made it clear in the interview that the legal issues played a huge part in the University's current response to this situation. If he is in fact suspended for any extended period of time, UT will have no choice but to terminate him. If they is any period of suspension, they can't keep him and save face with the entire athletic program appearing to accept unethical behavior as appropriate. Sad that he has put himself in this situation, but he has no one to blame but himself.

I don't agree that a one year suspension should automatically result in Pearl's firing. Far be it from me to take up for Bronzer Bruce, but I think if the AD and the decision makers feel UT is better going forward with Pearl after a year hiatus than they would be with a coaching change, you keep him.

If that happens who's the interim coach? I don't see a suspension coming but if they do I'm assuming one of the assistants won't get the 1 year gig as they're in trouble as well.

One of the assistants. You can't find anyone who would take the gig for one year. That's part of the equation when you decide if you can live with a one year suspension.

You guys seem to be forgetting that mtt2d will simply override the NCAA's decision if more sanctions are brought forth after the investigation wraps up...

I guess Pearl could potentially ask Tom Davis to do it. That would at least ensure continuity of style and none of the assistants would go from second in command to in control and back.

Do you think Hamilton could survive with keeping a coach with unethical conduct charges and a suspension? With all assistant coaches also involved in unethical conduct, they could all face some period of suspension. The NCAA has no hesitation in suspension for players who lie during investigations. Perhaps his sudden attack of conscience will allow them to let him off easy without a suspension.

how empty would the tommy bowl be w/ an interim coach? after the '10 and '11 editions of UT football, I can't see ppl turning out for that ... jmo, imo

Depends on how good the team was. Other than maybe Unimaine and MHF, people go to watch good basketball games, not Pearl sweating and yelling.

Exactly. That's ridiculous to pretend that if Pearl isn't standing on the sidelines that no one would attend games.

I'd like to believe that, but a lot of ppl want to keep pearl around no matter how hard the ncaa comes down on us ... it would be interesting to see how many showed up ....

Do you really think that people attend the basketball games only because of Pearl? Fans will flock to the games with a winning program, regardless of who the coach is.

how many ppl attended games when we were winning w/ uncle jed? I don't think the arena was full .. pearl is definitely part of the equation ... he has put the entire program in jeopardy with his lying and ppl are still defending him to the hilt ... that's fine if you're a big pearl supporter, but imo it's putting him ahead of the program ...

if pearl is suspended for a year and we get a post-season ban and/or scholly reductions, I think the interest will wane ...

No kidding? If we are banned from the NCAA and don't have a official coach, I'm sure interest will wane. We have had good attendance as long as we win with any coach. Why do you think the new arena was built other than Stokley would not handle the demand for tickets because we had a winning program.

would pratt have been built w/out pearl?

iirc, we weren't world beaters when the tommy bowl was built ..
