Pearl Grants Griffith's Wish

Then by all means change the pathetic excuse of half-court offense we use.

I get tired of some of the stuff too, but it's in the pg's hands. If he's playing ball, the sets won't be called as much. If he's dribbling at half court then looks at BP as in "what's the play'? Then they start doing that 15 lazy ass pass play and nobody looks at the goal or for a lane during set call and nobody cuts when they see an opening. That's where they need to be coached up or just do it. That's playing basketball in a set offense The D knows the play and starts overplaying, so you take advantage asap instead of throwing it to them up top, several times.

Might as well start stevie if it's down to this... I can tell you what NIT stands for this year... Not In Tennessee

The system didn't get us to the E8. Solid defense, good fortune and rebounding got us to the E8. The system has been a hindrance from day 1.

(And Lucas being out almost got us into the final four.)

The half court defense during that stretch and at the beginning of this season was stellar. Would've loved to have seen that combined with Controlled Chaos.

my $.02...

team is struggling... blame the PG. pearl has used this dumb trick before... remember JP committing 73 TO's in the first half versus American. this was after pearl pretty was much in love with R. Smith as a freshman... i recall the comments after the OSU game when no foul called (and Lofton was left dumb founded as to why he didn't get the last shot to drain it again).

i really think pearl has no clue what the problems are with this team or how to fix them... and we are all baffled that he thinks mcbee at the point is gonna solve ANYTHING at all.

my $.02 again...

pressing the whole game and relying on TO's and transition to generate most of your offense is not a winning formula against elite talent/coaching. HOWEVER, i think it can be effective when used as a tool you bring out for 10-15 minutes a game at appropriate strategic moments... their starting PG is in foul trouble... slam on the press, they call a TO to stop a run of ours... come out of the TO and slam on the press for a couple possessions... we haven't pressed in the first half at all... come out 2nd half with the press.

use it as surgical weapon.

of course... none of that matters if you don't know how to teach solid half-court principles your team can rely on in the grind it out battles down the stretch.

I am failing to see the positive in this move. Even if McBee has a better handle on the offense than anyone he could replace, he just doesn't have the ability to take on a position as important as point guard and not get schooled by better players.

How would anybody know which guys on the team can play anything? Neither Bruce or Tony will leave them in the game long enough as a unit to find out. The subbing starts for most of them after they have been in the game for about 3 minutes. Never seen anything like it - ever.

Trying to be positive. At least it means McBrick probably won't be throwing up uncontested threes.

I like McBee and look forward to seeing what he can do. Some of you just might be eating crow. Might want to get you some hot sauce!

Positivity would positively draw criticism. But I can tell you I feel better about the players and coaches and the quality of UT basketball than I have since about 1960 when you could still buy UT farm fruit and vegetables on Alcoa Highway at the Ag farm. Now you can dream that we might make the final four each year. We have a great chance to beat Kentucky and Vandy every year. You can bank that we will get to the Big Dance every year. Is it so new that only the youngest cannot appreciate it? Are there really so many experts out there that really think they know more basketball than Pearl? Or are they just a few people who post a lot and sound like a crowd.

And yet we're beating Kentucky about as much as we were before Pearl.

Jerry Tarkanian disagrees with you. For that matter, John Thompson does too. Forcing the game into a pace uncomfortable for the other team DOES work. The problem is that elite talent is required to consistently beat elite talent no matter what scheme is being implemented.

More than half the SEC usually get in. It's not the accomplishment it once was. When Ray Mears was coaching you had to WIN the SEC to get in.

Well, obviously I think this is a stupid move. But, I hope Skylar makes the best of the opportunity and proves us wrong somehow.

I hope he proves me dead wrong for the rest of the season.

My guess is he comes in tonight and plays at least better than what we've been getting, everyone thinks it is the solution, and as the remainder of the season goes on opposing coaches figure out what to do and he becomes less and less effective because he's not a natural point guard.

With McBee's quickness, shooting ability, defense, and passing ability, don't see how this can help but jump-start the offense. At least he is a good free throw shooter. Perhaps we can put him in to replace Tatum if the game is close at the end.
