Pearl Grants Griffith's Wish

I hope he proves me dead wrong for the rest of the season.

My guess is he comes in tonight and plays at least better than what we've been getting, everyone thinks it is the solution, and as the remainder of the season goes on opposing coaches figure out what to do and he becomes less and less effective because he's not a natural point guard.

I see him as more of a Band-Aid until Goins and Golden get going again. Hopefully won't take more than a game.

With McBee's quickness, shooting ability, defense, and passing ability, don't see how this can help but jump-start the offense. At least he is a good free throw shooter. Perhaps we can put him in to replace Tatum if the game is close at the end.

The lone stat that is giving me hope here is that he is 6-12 from three point land when he's played the point.

My theory is that he thinks too much about shooting (hence why he can hit a crazy shot but not a wide open three) and maybe, maybe he can't think as much about his shot from the point.

McBee's biggest problem is that he tries to hard.

no it isn't. It's that he has very limited athletic ability, so he's limited to shooting. As a shooter, he has a left body lean when he goes up and that will breed enormous inconsistency. If our staff doesn't address it, he'll keep throwing bricks.

Not all great shooters are great athletes. He is very insconsistent, but that can be due to a lot of different things. Mechanics and self-imposed pressure are a couple of them.

Good call.

I don't care the cause, if you're inconsistent you are not a great shooter, period. He obviously isn't a great athlete, or even a good one.

BPV - You don't think any of it goes back to mental? By all accounts he is lights out in practices and scrimmages, that's why it seems to me that part of it is just purely between the ears when the lights come on.

The conversation is about McBee. Who should we assume you are now talking about?

You shouldn't assume anything. BPV said that because McBee isn't a great athlete he is an inconsistent shooter. I responded that not all great shooters are great athletes.

I'm sure the mental aspect plays a part buy BPV is exactly right about him leaning to the left- he's doing himself no favors with that lean.

you would have to say that about all our players since practice reports also say we shoot FT's well in practice. You aren't a great shooter unless you can do it when it counts- in games

This I agree with. McBee shooting very well in practice and not in games leads me to believe it is more mental than anything.

Wrong. He said because of his limited athleticism he is limited to being a shooter.

He then explained why his shooting is off.

No I didn't. Steve Alford was a very sub-par athlete, but one of the best shooters ever.

I think his lack of athleticism is making the speed of the game too much for him.

Couple bad mechanics with rushing to meet the speed of the game and you have a recipe for inconsistency.
